Grey nomads, this is your last chance: the V8 Nissan Patrol ends production in August — but the replacement is coming fast

Grey nomads on the towing trail have just been put on notice by Nissan Australia.

If they want to get into a shiny new V8-powered Patrol they will have to act fast, with production of the heavyweight tow-mobile set to end in August.

The end of production for the Y62 series of the Patrol will also mean an end for its locally-updated hero car, the Warrior by Premcar, developed and built in Melbourne.

But that’s just the bad news and there is plenty of good stuff.

Nissan has no plan to discontinue the Patrol and is closing fast on final sign-off for the Y63 series, complete with a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that promises to match the towing ability of the outgoing V8 with far better efficiency.

Orders for the first of the new Y63 series will open before the end of the year.

And there is almost certain to be a Warrior version in 2027 as Nissan Australia continues its partnership with Premcar.

“As we look ahead to the all-new to Australia Y63 later this year, the run-out of the Y62 represents a genuine ‘last chance’ moment for Australians who want to add a new V8 Patrol to their garage,” said said Steve Milette, the managing director of Nissan Oceania.

What is not being disclosed is any pricing information.

The showroom sticker – currently starting from $96,540 – has been one of the big draw cards for the V8 Patrol, as it comfortably undercuts the Toyota LandCruiser – even allowing for the extra thirst of its V8 engine.

An all-new model with a more high-tech power-plant is likely to mean a significant price increase, although Nissan Australia will have to push hard to undercut the $99,340 of the cheapest GX model in the LandCruiser 300 Series.

While Nissan is looking to the future with the Y63, it is also celebrating the 60-year past of the Patrol in Australia.

The original G60, wearing Datsun badges, arrived in the 1960s and was the first vehicle to complete a successful crossing of the Simpson Desert.

Successes for the five generations of the Patrol have also included 15 consecutive national off-road racing titles and, most recently, development of the Warrior by Premcar.
