Hollywood icon Jane Fonda has worn many hats over the years. From movie star to activist to award-winning thespian, the two-time Academy Award winner also found time to create an exercise-at-home video empire.
Now the 87-year-old legend has revealed how her fitness journey has changed over the years in an interview with People magazine where she talked about her own exercise regime and how she still challenges herself.
“I essentially do everything I used to do, just slower,” she said through People.
“I used to be a runner, but now I love walking. I love being outdoors in the woods, especially up and down hills.”
However, the Nine to Five star admitted she needed to mix up her routine to keep motivated as she still works out every day.
“I alternate days doing upper body and lower body work for strength. I also find some way to get cardio in. Walking outside is one of my favorite ways to do so,” she added.
Reminiscing about her exercise journey, Fonda said there weren’t many rigorous forms of exercise available to women in the 70s and 80s and this led to her first exercise video, Jane Fonda’s Workout, which was inspired by her book, Jane Fonda’s Workout Book.
“I learned the basic workout from a charismatic teacher named Leni Kasden in the ’70s,” she said.
“After the videos came out, I’d get amazing letters from around the world. One was from a young woman in the Peace Corps in Guatemala who did the exercises in her mud hut.
“Another woman said she looked in the mirror as she was brushing her teeth and noticed new muscles in her arms.
“She wrote that it made her feel empowered, and that day she went to work and stood up to her handsy boss for the first time.”
Fitness is not all Fonda is passionate about. Fonda continues to be a trailblazer when it comes to ageing and regularly shares her candid thoughts on growing older, from the challenges and joys of the process to the importance of continuing to learn and grow throughout one’s life.
In a recent interview, the multi-talented entertainer joined fellow actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the Wiser Than Me podcast to delve deeper into the subject.
Fonda revealed that she felt physically and mentally much younger than her chronological age.
“Spiritually and mentally and psychologically, I’m way younger than 85,” she said at the time.
Fonda proceeded to articulate the insights she has gleaned about the ageing process from her own personal experience.
“One of the things that I’ve learned as I’ve gotten into serious old age is when you’re inside it as opposed to looking at it from the outside, it’s not nearly as scary,” she said.
“The chronology of age is not what’s important, it’s health.
“I’m fine, I’m healthy, I’ve had cancer but it’s in remission… If you’re healthy, 85 can be quite young.
“Even at 85, I am strong.
“I’m surprised at how hard things get even when you are strong, but I have made peace with my body. It has gotten me a long ways, it’s stood up for me, so I appreciate my body.
“I don’t criticize and hate on it anymore.”
