Melania Trump underwent a surgical procedure on Monday to treat a benign kidney condition and will remain at Walter Reed medical centre for the rest of the week, the first lady’s office confirmed on Monday.

Spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement that he first lady, 48, underwent an embolisation procedure to treat the kidney condition.

“The procedure was successful and there were no complications,” Grisham said. She is however expected to stay in hospital for the duration of the week to recuperate.

“The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere,” she added.

President Donald Trump tweeted he was on his way to visit his wife, who he said was in “good spirits”. The president said he was going to visit his wife at the hospital, which is located in Bethesda, Maryland, a Washington suburb.

Taking to Twitter he wrote: “Heading over to Walter Reed Medical Center to see our great First Lady, Melania. Successful procedure, she is in good spirits. Thank you to all of the well-wishers!”

Grisham also took to Twitter to thank the hospital’s medical staff for taking “such good care” of Mrs Trump. She wrote: “Thank you to the amazing medical staff @WRBethesda for taking such good care of @FLOTUS!”

The surgery comes a week after Mrs Trump unveiled her Be Best childhood wellness program designed to combat bullying and promote the emotional well-being of children.

The former model said the campaign would focus on values such as healthy living, encouragement, kindness, and respect. She said parents, teachers, and other adults can help prepare children for their futures by encouraging this behaviour.

“I am well-aware that people are skeptical of me discussing this topic,” she said, CNN reported. “I have been criticised for my commitment to tackling this issue, and I know that will continue. But it will not stop me from doing what I know is right.”

Late last month she organised her first state dinner, welcoming French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House. In the lead up the event, Melania shared a number of shots to social media, giving the world a glimpse of the preparation that went into welcoming the Macrons to the White House.
