Beloved Neighbours star Ian Smith has shared a candid update on his cancer battle, revealing both the challenges he has faced and his determination to keep moving forward.

Best known for his long-running role as Harold Bishop on Neighbours, Smith has become one of Australia’s most familiar television faces. Now, he is using that same openness and honesty to speak about a deeply personal fight.

In recent interviews, the veteran actor spoke frankly about living with cancer, describing it as confronting but also something he is choosing to face head-on.

Smith confirmed he is battling a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer.

He revealed the cancer is pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, an uncommon subtype of lung cancer that is known for being fast-growing and difficult to treat. He was diagnosed in late 2023 after initially experiencing symptoms including a persistent cough and breathlessness.

What he’s said about it

Smith has spoken candidly about both the reality of the diagnosis and how he’s approaching it:

He described the cancer as “incurable”, explaining that treatment is focused on slowing its progression rather than curing it.

He has undergone immunotherapy, which he said initially showed promising results before the cancer began progressing again.

Speaking about his outlook, he said he is “not afraid of dying”, but admitted the uncertainty of the illness is difficult.

“I’ve had a good life. I’ve got no complaints.”

“I’m not giving up,” he said, acknowledging the difficult road while making it clear he is focused on making the most of the time ahead.

Smith revealed that the diagnosis has forced him to reassess parts of his life, but it has also brought moments of clarity. Like many people facing serious illness, he has spoken about appreciating everyday experiences more and valuing time with loved ones.

Despite the seriousness of his condition, there have also been flashes of the warmth and humour that made Harold Bishop such a fan favourite. Smith has balanced honesty about the reality of cancer with a sense of perspective that resonates with many Australians who have faced similar battles.

His story has struck a chord with fans, particularly those who have followed him for decades on Australian television. Messages of support have flowed in, reflecting just how deeply he is connected to audiences.

Smith’s willingness to speak publicly also shines a light on the broader experience of living with cancer – something that affects countless Australian families. His comments echo a familiar theme: while treatments and outcomes vary, mindset and support can play a powerful role.

For now, Smith says he is taking things as they come, focusing on what he can control and continuing to engage with the world around him.

It’s a difficult chapter, but one he is facing with the same quiet resilience that defined his most famous character—determined, grounded and not ready to step away just year.
