Which fizzy drink is your favourite?

If you’re the kind of person who loves nothing more than downing an icy cold soft drink on a hot summer’s day, you may be interested to know which soda pop is worst for you.

While there are plenty of drinks out there that market themselves as “diet” or “healthier alternatives” to regular soft drinks, there’s no denying that most of them contain more sugar than we should be feeding our bodies.

In fact, the ABS says that Australians are consuming around 60 grams of free sugar a day.

While that may not sound like a lot, it’s actually the same as eating 14 teaspoons of white sugar.

Nine Coach has published an article which names and shames Australia’s most-loved soft drinks. In their research, they’ve ranked them in terms of sugar content. So, if you’re ever worried about the amount of sugar in your favourite fizzy drinks, this study has you covered.

While It’s a favourite for it’s cherry flavour, Dr Pepper contains the least amount of sugar of any drink in the study. Per 100ml, there’s just 7.2g of sugar.

Schweppes Dry Ginger Ale, which has been an Aussie favourite for years, was next, containing 76g of sugar per 100ml.

With a slightly sour taste, Lift was next with 8.4g of sugar, or 23g per 300ml bottle. Sprite, also famed for its lemon flavour, contains 9g of sugar per 100ml.

Regular Coca Cola wasn’t even at the top of the list. While it still contains around 10.6g of sugar per 100ml, it sat at around the middle of the ranking. Pepsi was a place higher on 10.9g, while Vanilla Coke, Orange Fanta and Pasito were all ahead on 10.9g and 11.2g.

Surprisingly, Solo, which has a similar taste to Lift, was higher than all on 11.5g of sugar. Similarly, Fanta’s rival Sunkist proved to be even more unhealthy on 11.8g of sugar per 100ml.

Coming in third place was Schweppes Traditional Raspberry with 12.1g of sugar per 100ml. Mountain Dew was second on 12.3g of sugar, while Fanta Grape proved to be the unhealthiest drink by 0.1 of a gram.

With 12.4g of sugar per 100ml or 11 teaspoons of sugar per a standard can, it’s easy to see why it’s the unhealthiest drink on the list.
