To celebrate the news that The Ten Tenors are coming home for this exciting tour, we had a chat with 1/10th of the group, Melbourne-based, Michael Edwards, 26…

On music…

What got me started in a career in music was… “I’ve just always sung. When I was a child I sang with a children’s choir in Melbourne and it’s always been my passion. After finishing high school I couldn’t really imagine studying anything else except for music, so I did my bachelor’s degree and now here I am.”

My big breakthrough was… “Although I did some different things around town, joining The Ten Tenors has really been one of my biggest career achievements to date.”

I joined The Ten Tenors in… “2014. I started singing with the group as the understudy, and went on to join the lineup at the end of my first three-month tour.”

In my opinion, the secret of the popularity of the group is… “That we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We love performing great music every night to the best of our abilities, but we also love to have fun and i think the audience can see that when they come to our shows.”

The highlight of my career with The Ten Tenors so far is… “There are two highlights, really. The first show I did in Melbourne in 2016 was a real highlight. I’d been performing with the group for nearly two years and the it was the first time my friends and family were able to see the show. The other highlight was last year, performing to a packed stadium in Buenos Aires Argentina. It was a real ‘pinch me’ and ‘how did this happen?’ moment and will be hard to top.”

The strangest place I’ve been recognised is… “When people see 10 guys wearing matching tuxedos it’s difficult to slip under the radar!”

The most embarrassing moment I’ve ever had on stage is… “Completely forgetting to sing a solo! When I was covering one of the other tenors who was sick i just didn’t sing the line I was supposed to. Definitely embarrassing.”

At home I listen to… “Pretty much anything! I’m very open-minded when it comes to listening to music, so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.”

The last gig I went to was… “A music festival in Australia called Splendour in the Grass. It is a massive festival in Northern New South Wales with about 40,000 people attending. As well as major international headline acts it also gives a platform to up-and-coming local Australian artists. Four days of awesome music.”

A song that means a lot to me is… “‘The Way You Look Tonight’. Not even sure why, but I love songs that have been re-created and re-interpreted by so many different artists.”

Since I’ve been with The Ten Tenors, the number of times I reckon I’ve sung ‘Nessun Dorma’ is… “It would have to be about 500. I’m sure there are guys with the group well into quadruple figures!”

On the road…

The first thing I do when I reach a new place is… “Look on a map and find out if there is a coffee shop near our theatre or hotel.”

The one surprising/interesting/unusual thing I always take with me when I travel is… “My pillow! Sounds strange, but that familiar comfort makes a difference (and some hotel pillows aren’t the greatest).”

My favourite place that I’ve been to so far is… “Buenos Aires, Argentina. It felt like such a mix of cultures – a European vibe with a South American twist. The steak and red wine is good too…”

The best souvenir I’ve ever picked up on my travels is… “A voodoo doll from New Orleans! I got completely caught up in the Louisiana voodoo.”

The thing I enjoy most about travelling is… “Seeing places I would never see. With The Ten Tenors we do some shows in the most incredibly unlikely places. When we were in a tiny town called Newbury, North Carolina last year we went into a bar that opens especially for a group of townspeople who have gone at 3pm on a Wednesday every week for over 50 years. Amazing.”

The thing I enjoy least about travelling is… “Being in a different place every night can be exhausting. Waking up every morning and re-packing your suitcase to get back on the road is somewhat a nomadic life. It does have its bonuses too – we know how to pack our lives into 50 pounds.”

The best holiday I’ve ever had was… “The answer to this will change depending on where I’ve been most recently. And most recently I’ve been to Panama, sailed through the San Blas Islands and spent three and a half weeks in Colombia. An incredible part of the world I can’t wait to go back to.”

The worst travel experience I’ve ever had was… “Thinking I’d lost my passport when I was getting ready to fly out of Malaysia. I absolutely tore my suitcase apart. Thankfully, it was in the bottom of my bag.”

The most surprising place I’ve ever been to is… “On that same trip: Malaka in Malaysia. It was settled by the Dutch and has some very unexpected buildings and architecture.”

Apart from family and friends, the things I miss most when I’m away is… “Going out for brunch in Melbourne. Cafes in Melbourne really know how to make a good brekky and a great coffee.”

The one place every travel lover needs to go is… “Central Australia. Uluru is even more impressive in real life.”

My ultimate travel hack that I would recommend to everyone is… “Carry a good book and have a Netflix account. There can be a lot of waiting around during travel.”

The place where I would most like to be right now is… “At this very moment the winter chill is still lingering in Melbourne, so anywhere with sun, sand and water!”
