Far from the bustling cities on the east coast and kilometres from the ocean lies Cameron Corner – the Aussie outback destination where the borders of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia meet.
It’s a true picture of what outback Australia looks like, with the Strzelecki Desert to the west, Bulloo overflow in the north-west and the rugged Barrier and Grey Ranges providing a divide between the states. There’s no sight of crystal white sand in this part of the country, with red dirt instead stretching for kilometres on end, providing a stark contrast to the sparkling blue skies up above.
The region itself is home to very few people, but in recent years its become especially popular with tourists who want to experience the beauty of the outback. In fact, its often considered a bucket list destination by many on their travels around the great Land Down Under.
So, it’s no wonder that tours are being created to give Aussies a chance to experience their own backyard. Next year the Travel at 60 community is heading there on an epic 14-night adventure, travelling all the way from Brisbane to Cameron Corner and back again.
It’s both educational and adventurous, giving travellers the chance to explore Queensland’s wide open spaces and majestic landscapes, learn about the history of the region, visit remote towns and meet legendary outback characters.
On the adventure to the west the group of over-60s will travel through Toowoomba, Roma, Charleville, Quilpie and Tibooburra, taking part in many activities along the way. In true outback fashion travellers will visit a working cattle station and feast on a delicious two-course camp oven dinner, before heading to the Roma Sale Yards, which is the largest cattle selling facility in Australia.
The journey will then venture southwest across the famous Dingo Barrier Fence to the historic Noccundra Hotel and then into the Sturt National Park to Cameron Corner, where the three state borders meet. Strzelecki Desert to the west, with its extensive red dune fields is sure to leave people amazed, and there might even be a sighting of some dusky hopping mice which call the region home.
But, the adventure doesn’t stop there. Over the next week travellers will visit Innamincka, Birdsville, Windorah and Londreach on the journey back east. They will have the opportunity to stand on the well-known Birdsville Racetrack and explore Inland Hospital and Royal ruins, see rolling red sand dunes, visit the famous Qantas Founders Museum and join the Drover’s Sunset Cruise on the beautiful Thomson River – and that’s just to name a few of the incredible experiences!
The tour ends in Longreach, with travellers then able to choose to either travel overnight on the Spirit of the Outback back to Brisbane, or fly to the capital city from Longreach Airport.
