The Matildas have done it again after securing a nail-biting win over France on Saturday, August 12 continuing their stellar World Cup campaign and securing a spot in the semi-finals.
In front of 49,461 fans at Suncorp Stadium, Australia achieved history when they triumphed over France following a thrilling 7-6 penalty shootout.
In the longest shootout in Women’s World Cup history, that followed a 0-0 tie in extra time, goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold emerged as the night’s hero with three crucial saves, earning her the title of Player of the Match.
During the shootout, Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler, Katrina Gorry, Tameka Yallop, Ellie Carpenter, and Vine all made their penalties count. But the French goalkeeper, Solene Durand, stood tall, stopping the shots from Steph Catley, Arnold, and Clare Hunt, after being brought in for the shootout.
With the thousands-strong crowd on the edge of their seat, Cortnee Vine slotted in the winning penalty, securing a gripping quarter-final victory.
Following the stellar performance, Head Coach Tony Gustavsson revealed that he was “so freaking proud” of his team.
“The bravery that they show tonight. Unbelievable,” he told Optus Sport.
“Obviously I’m emotional now.
“Yeah, you know, I’ve won medals, but I said to the team before this game, it’s not about the medal around your neck. It’s about the heart beating on the back side of it and the heart that beat tonight in this team and in this country (was) unbelievable.”
Gustavsson’s praise was echoed by scenes of celebration nationwide, as fans took to the streets to rejoice in the incredible victory. Social media also lit up with congratulations and praise, as the celebratory spirit spread rapidly online.
The Matildas will next face off against England in the semi-finals on Wednesday, August 16.
