She’s Australia’s very own princess and, if the rumours are true, Princess Mary could be set for a star studded homecoming in just a matter of months.
According to the Herald Sun, Princess Mary and Prince Frederik could be among the public figures set to attend the Invictus Games in Sydney in October, as Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, fly out from the UK to attend.
When asked if Frederik and Mary would be in Australia for the Games – which honour wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women from around the world – the Danish Royal’s press office refused to deny the claims, instead telling the newspaper “it is too early to say.”
If the Crown Princess does make the trip home however, it’ll be the first time she has been back on home soil since December 2017, when the Danish royal family headed to Sydney before jetting off to Mary’s home state of Tasmania to celebrate Christmas with her family.
Sydney holds a special place in the royal couple’s hearts, as it is where Frederik and Mary met during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The royal couple met at the Slip Inn pub near King Street Wharf while Frederik was in town supporting team Denmark for the Olympics.
After a brief attempt at a long-distance relationship, Mary moved to Copenhagen to be with her prince and they married in 2004. The couple have four children, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
But Princess Mary and Prince Frederik won’t be the only royal couple in town as they could be joining forces with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the annual sporting event, which was launched by Prince Harry in 2014.
Buckingham Palace announced that Harry, and his new wife Meghan Markle, would be making their first intercontinental trip since tying the knot in May, with the pair set to visit Commonwealth countries New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, as well as Australia.
Harry, who is a former veteran himself having completed two tours of Afghanistan, created the Paralympic-style games as a way to inspire wounded soldiers toward recovery.
It’s also rumoured that the former US President and Harry’s good friend Barack Obama could potentially be attending the Games, however sources said Game organisers had received “no confirmation yet” that the Obamas would be making the trip down under.
The Invictus Games will be held in Sydney from October 20- 27.
