While all eyes should have been on Meghan, Duchess of Sussex as she joined her husband and the royal family for her Buckingham Palace balcony debut, it was the royal youngsters who well and truly stole the show at the event.

As is becoming quite a tradition at the Trooping the Colour for Queen Elizabeth’s birthday, the royals proved once again they’re very much normal people – despite their royal status, wealth and fancy outfits. For example, the whole show was nearly thrown into chaos when Princess Charlotte, three, fell over when the entire family was on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

While a formal event, Duchess Catherine’s motherly instincts quickly kicked in and as she tried to comfort her visibly distraught daughter. Viewers at home noticed the little royal leaning over the balcony for a closer look when she appeared to lose her balance and slip. Almost instantly, the Duchess of Cambridge scooped up her daughter and comforted her until she stopped crying.

As parents and grandparents, you’ll know how hard it can sometimes be to control an upset child – especially in public. Still, Catherine didn’t miss a beat as cameras caught her hugging her daughter and comforting her until she was okay again.

Charlotte wasn’t the only royal child who caused a scene during the official celebration for Queen Elizabeth’s 92nd birthday. Royalists couldn’t help but notice Savannah Phillips, the seven-year-old daughter of Peter and Autumn, becoming quite bossy towards Prince George. As the future king began giggling when the Royal Air Force flew past the palace, his older cousin could be seen shushing him. She was also spotted covering his mouth with her hands. It’s not the first time a royal commotion has been caught on camera during the Trooping the Colour. During the celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday two years ago, footage of Elizabeth herself giving Prince William a talking to went viral. She told her grandson to “stand up”, prompting Prince George who was standing next to his dad to give himself a tiny face palm.

Earlier in the day, Prince Harry and his new bride were seen riding in a carriage together as they attended the event for their first time as a married couple. Duchess Camilla arrived in a carriage with Catherine, while the Duke of Cambridge arrived on horseback.

Family squabbles aside, they all united later on the balcony in front of the tens of thousands of royalists who showed up at Whitehall to join in on the celebrations. The Queen also ditched the dark sunglasses she’d been wearing after undergoing cataract surgery last month.

What do you think? How do you handle an upset grandchild in public?
