The Duke of Cambridge will travel to New Zealand next month to honour victims of the horrific Christchurch terror attack.

In a statement released on the royal family’s website, it was announced the 36-year-old would head to the city in April at the request of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge will visit New Zealand on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen to honour the victims of the Christchurch mosques terrorist attack,” the statement read.

“The Duke will meet with those affected by the attack and will pay tribute to the extraordinary compassion and solidarity that the people of New Zealand have displayed in recent weeks.”

Ardern also shared news of the visit, claiming she’s pleased to hear the prince would spend time in the country.

“I’m really pleased that he can make a short visit to support those affected by the attack and pay tribute to the extraordinary compassion and solidarity that New Zealanders have displayed in recent weeks.”

Shortly after the attack, which claimed the lives of 50 people, the royal family took to social media to show their support for the people of New Zealand.

The Queen, Prince Charles and wife Camilla, Prince Harry and Meghan and Prince William and Kate all shared heartfelt messages to the country’s people in their time of hardship.

“I have been deeply saddened by the appalling events in Christchurch today,” Queen Elizabeth II wrote in a post shared on Instagram. “Prince Phillip and I send our condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives.

“I also pay tribute to the emergency services and volunteers who are providing support to those who have been injured. At this tragic time my thoughts and prayers are with all New Zealanders.”

The younger members of the royal family sent a similar message following the crime, noting how evil the attack was.

“This senseless attack is an affront to the people of Christchurch and New Zealand, and the broader Muslim community,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said in a message shared on Instagram.

“It is a horrifying assault on a way of life that embodies decency, community and friendship. We know that from this devastation and deep mourning, the people of New Zealand will unite to show that such evil can never defeat compassion and tolerance.”
