In a moving display of unity, Prince William and Prince Harry set aside their differences and came together to honor the memory of their beloved mother, Princess Diana, at the annual Diana Awards
Established in memory of Princess Diana, the event recognises the social and humanitarian efforts of over 180 young people
Both princes delivered moving speeches to those in attendance for the virtual ceremony, paying tribute to the extraordinary legacy left behind by their late mother.
Although they didn’t appear together, the sentiment expressed by both brothers was evident: their mutual love and admiration for their mother would always surpass any disagreements.
Prince William extended his “heartfelt congratulations” to those in attendance who “challenge the status quo, to confront injustice, and to inspire meaningful change”.
“Your accomplishments are a testament to your passion and commitment to creating positive change. You are the torchbearers of hope and inspiration, lighting the way for others to follow,” he said,
The Prince of Wales also spoke of the importance of events like the Diana Awards, while reflecting on his commitment to keeping his mother’s legacy alive.
“To everyone watching all these stories remind us why organisations like The Diana Award are so important,” he said.
“It is a reminder that when we invest in young people, when we provide them with the tools and opportunities to make a difference, they can truly change the world… a belief shared by my mother, and one I am proud to continue in her name.”
Prince Harry appeared alongside 2021 Diana Award recipient Vee Kathivu to recognise the efforts of recipients and express how his mother’s example serves as a shining example of how to “navigate the complexities of our world today”.
“As we come together, I am reminded of the profound belief my mother held in the transformative power of young people,” he said.
“She recognised their unique ability to challenge the status quo and push for a more inclusive and compassionate society. Her legacy continues to inspire and serve as an example of how to navigate the complexities of our world today.
“When someone steps up to be of service, they automatically join this collective. No one is ever a conduit for change alone. Each one of us has the ability to help create a more equitable world. The brilliant Award recipients we’re honoring today are proof of that. They exemplify the notion that when we use our voices, change can happen.”
Despite years of strained relations between the brothers, the pair have previously made an effort to put their differences aside when it counts.
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, September 8, William and Harry reunited to greet well-wishers at Windsor Castle.
William had reportedly extended the invitation to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to join him and his wife, the Princess of Wales, for the walk.
In a show of unity, the two couples walked through the gates of Windsor Castle together on Saturday, September 10, 2022 before meeting and speaking with members of the crowd and viewing the flowers left at the gates in tribute to the late Queen.
