It’s Prince Philip as we’ve never seen him before.
A new documentary celebrating and paying tribute to the late royal’s life will air in the UK tomorrow. Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers is a compilation of never-before-seen archival footage of the royals interspersed with interviews of royal family members.
Several snippets of the documentary have been shared already in the lead up to its airing. One such clip released by @clarencehouse showed Prince Charles speaking to the camera, narrating a video of himself and Princess Anne riding tricycles, being chased by Prince Philip also on a tricycle, and Princess Margaret running behind.
In the video, Charles said: “He was marvellous at arranging silly games. I mean, the fun of having obviously young parents was… there were lots of chasing around and mad things”.
Two extracts from the upcoming documentary have also been published on @theroyalfamily Instagram, depicting both Princess Anne and Prince Edward retelling stories of fishing with their father. Princess Anne shares a touch of her father’s trademark humour, explaining how he encouraged her to fish.
“I always said I couldn’t catch anything and he’d say, ‘Nonsense, come with me.’ And after I had been casting for about half an hour, he said, ‘I see what you mean.’ And I just knew it was something I could never do,” she said.
Prince Edward also shares sweet memories of his father discussing how they used to go fishing together.
“I can’t remember at what point I then was given charge of the oars and… then had to learn how to row a boat,” he said.
The documentary will provide an exclusive look into the personal lives of the royals, presenting a far softer side of them than the public usually sees.
Originally planned to be a documentary for the Duke of Edinburgh’s 100th birthday, the focus of the film had to shift following Prince Philip’s passing in April 2021. The documentary will be live on BBC One at 9pm, Wednesday September 22.
