As anticipation mounts for the ascent of Prince Frederik and Australia’s Princess Mary to the throne, the Danish Royal Household has unveiled their captivating official portrait showcasing the enchanting couple.
The snapshot was captured during a photoshoot held around two years ago, setting the stage for the Crown Princess’s anticipated 50th birthday celebrations in 2022.In the official portrait, Princess Mary graces the scene wearing the stunning Ruby Parure Tiara, a piece with a rich history dating back to 1804 when it was created for Swedish Queen Desiree Clary before Napoleon Bonaparte’s imperial coronation at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France.
This historic tiara found its way into the Danish royal family’s collection when Princess Lovisa, a descendant of Queen Desiree Clary, married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark in 1869.
Complementing the timeless tiara, Mary sports an elegant floor-length dress designed by Danish fashion icon Lasse Spangenberg. The dress features long sleeves, a cinched waist, and a radiant shimmer, adding a touch of glamour to the royal affair.
On Sunday, January 14, all eyes will be fixed on Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen as Prince Frederik and Princess Mary take their place as the new King and Queen of Denmark. Closer to home, excitement is building for the big day.
Historian Darius von Guttner highlighted the significance of Princess Mary becoming the first Australian to ascend to the throne of a nation.
“It appeals to us that one of us – a commoner, an ordinary citizen of Australia – can become a queen,” the Australian Catholic University professor told AAP.
“We all love a good story and this is a brilliant story.”
In addition to Mary’s story reading like a fairy tale, Australian Monarchist League chair Eric Abetz believes Princess Mary will strengthen ties between Australians and the British royals.
“They’re an institution which acts as a safety valve in the parliamentary democratic system that we enjoy,” he told AAP.
Expressing pride in his Tasmanian roots, Abetz remarked on the thrill of witnessing someone close to home step into a role of such great significance.
“It’s a wonderful thing for Mary personally but, of course, also Tasmania and Australia,” he said.
With the big day just around the corner, the anticipation grows, marking not just a royal transition but a joyful celebration of Princess Mary’s unique path to the throne.
The impending coronation is more than an event; it’s a charming chapter in history, filled with love and royalty, sure to be cherished for years to come.
