The former lead detective on the William Tyrrell case, Gary Jubelin, has weighed in on the recent renewed searches for the toddler, claiming they have “petered out”

Gary Jubelin became a well-known public figure when he led the investigation into William Tyrrell’s disappearance for more than four years from early 2015 until 2019. He was stood down as the head of Strike Force Rosann not long before he left the NSW Police force.

Authorities commenced fresh searches for the remains of the missing three-year-old in November 2021 after police announced: “new information had come to light.”

In a recent interview with 2GB Radio, Jubelin claimed “if they found something, I imagine they would be aware of that by now.”

“I can only comment from the outside as I’m on the outside now but it seemed to be overly confident, the way that was portrayed,’ he said.

“The way it was portrayed … gave everyone the confidence there was going to be a major breakthrough, then that sort of went silent and just petered out.

“It was almost like it was a fait accompli, and as it’s played out something was going to be found and as it’s played out, nothing was found at the time.

“But they may have something I’m not aware of.”

Jubelin stressed he “is not privy to everything” that the current investigators are currently examining.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate I make a comment in regard to the investigation,” he said.

“I don’t think there’d be a member of the NSW Police that doesn’t want to solve this case and bring closure to the family or some resolution to the family.”

Jubelin has never been one to shy away from his voicing his opinions on the current William Tyrrell investigation after he was stood down as lead investigator.

In November 2021, Jubelin hit out at former New South Wales Police Commissioner Mick Fuller after he criticised Jubelin’s handling of the Tyrell investigation calling it “a bit of mess” that current investigators “have cleaned up”.

Jubelin defended the way the case was handled on 2GB Radio, on November 18, while addressing the recent criticism.

“I‘ve been watching and I give respect to the police. I know they’re in there. They’re trying hard,” he said.

“The timing of information that’s been released is a big coincidence, certain things and the way it’s playing out very, very publicly.

“I sit here very confidently and that’s why I take issue when I hear comments that the investigation was in a shambles when it was taken over.

“I rely on my experience along with my gut but I always defer to the facts.”
