It’s safe to say unusual names are becoming a lot more common. And now it seems parents are even turning to the calendar months for inspiration.

According to online site Mum Central, one of Australia’s leading parenting networks, calendar month names are on the rise this year. They predict that January, May, April, June and August will be some of the most popular ones for 2021. Meanwhile, the not-so-obvious calendar-inspired names include Archie (for March), Toby (for October), Nova (for November), Juno or Jupiter (for June) and Ember (for September, November and December).

And they’re definitely onto something, as Princess Eugenie recently gave birth to a baby boy named August Philip Hawke Brooksbank on February 9. The name pays tribute to Eugenie’s 99-year-old grandfather Prince Philip and Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert, whose full name was Franz Albert August Karl Emanuel.

Days of the week have also grown in popularity for names, with Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday leading the pack. Not-so-obvious ones such as Freya (Friday is translated from Freya’s Day) and Dominic (meaning “born on Sunday”) are also expected to be pretty popular this year.

As for the reason behind the trend, Mum Central says, “They are a great way to add an extra level of meaning to your child’s name. And we’re not just talking about birth month names either. Many parents are opting for a seasonal name, a day of the week name, or even a time of the day to commemorate their little one’s special day of birth.”

And that seems to be the case for television presenter Grant Denyer and his wife Chezzi, who recently welcomed their third daughter, Sunday Mary Mae, into the world. Last month, Chezzi shared the special meaning behind the adorable moniker, revealing she’s “always loved the name Sunday”. She also added at the time that Sunday is the couple’s favourite day of the week.

The online parenting network has also predicted that seasonal names, such as spring, autumn, winter and summer, will be big this year, as will times of the day, such as Dusk, Eve/Eva, Dawn, Midnight and Nyx. Not-so-obvious options also included Bradwell (meaning “from the broad spring”), Laverna (meaning “born in the spring”), Aviva (meaning “springlike”), Jora (meaning “autumn rain”), Hazan (Turkish word for “autumn”) and Aki/Akiko (Japanese word for autumn).
