AMA slams Pete Evans over health claims

'Paleo Pete' defended his health claims in the interview.

Celebrity chef Pete Evans has been warned by the Australian Medical Association to stop handing out health and dietary advice.

Evans appeared on Seven’s Sunday Night at the weekend where he defended his claims about the benefits of a Paleo diet and said dairy in cows milk removes calcium from your bones.

During the episode, the AMA tweeted Evans was putting lives at risk with his “extreme” advice.

“Pete Evans putting his fans’ health at risk with extreme advice on diet, fluoride, calcium. Celebrity chef shouldn’t dabble in medicine,” they wrote.

AMA Vice President Tony Bartone also took a swipe.

“Willful arrogance mischievously questioning medical advice. Decades scientific research. Celebrities putting #healthatrisk,” he wrote on Twitter.

During the sometimes heated interview, Evans said the idea of getting calcium from dairy from “one of the best pieces of marketing” he’d ever heard.

Evans has previously copped backlash for his Paleo diet push and had one of his popular books, Bubba Yum Yum, pulled from shelves after a bone broth recipe for babies was deemed dangerous for young children.

Addressing the controversy last night, he dismissed the furore against him.

“What do you need a qualification for to talk common sense? That’s what I say to it,” he said.

He also backed up his previous claims that most sunscreens are toxic and do you more harm than good and accused the media of publishing fake news about him.

“The media likes to put fake news out there or create sensational headlines for the sake of selling a paper or getting clicks onto their website,” he told Sunday Night.

“I did say if we go out in the middle of the day, for long periods of time, then I use a non-toxic sunscreen.

“A lot of sunscreens, as I said, are full of toxic chemicals you just would not put on your face or your children’s faces. I never said ‘don’t use sunscreen’.

“Make sure you choose one that is the least toxic.”
