Why owning a dog can drastically change your life

Share:
Owning a dog has many health benefits.

There are many great reasons for owning a dog.

The companionship for one thing. And what is not to love about those adorable cute faces as they watch your every move, even more so during meal time.

But there is evidence that owning a dog can make you more active, especially for the over 60’s who might be more inclined to slow down as they get older. That means great health benefits without you even realising.

Researchers from Glasgow Caledonian University, together with WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition in the UK did the study. Dr Philippa Dall, senior research fellow at the university said owning a dog helped owners each week to meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity. “We found that dog owners aged 65 and over spent on average an additional 22 minutes walking, taking an extra 2,760 steps per day when compared to people who didn’t own a dog,” Dr Dall said, according to Medical Express

They also found dog owners sat down for shorter periods at once.

It’s not the first good health news researchers have found about pet ownership.

There is lots of research to show that owning a dog can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels while also improving your cardiovascular health. They are also known to improve survival rates following a heart attack and help relieve depression.

Not only that, they are great ice-breakers when you out visiting the local dog park, so are a perfect way to make new friends.
