Former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is certainly not afraid of experimenting when it comes to fashion and has wowed in a variety of bold ensembles in recent years. However the retired pollie pulled off one of her most daring looks yet on Tuesday as she got dolled up to celebrate the Melbourne Cup.

The 64-year-old opted for a splash of colour for the momentous day, which sees people across Australia dress to impress, even if they’re not attending the race – which was run to empty stands this year due to Covid-19.

Julie looked incredible in a mid-length floral frock, which cinched her in at the waist and fell to her shins in a fit and flare style. The dress which featured a bold yellow, blue and pink floral print also ensured the fashionista stood out from the crowd thanks to statement ruffle detailing on the right shoulder.

But it wasn’t just Julie’s dress that caused a stir as the former lawyer finished off the look with an equally show-stopping headpiece that looked to be made of real flowers in various shades of pink and yellow. Like many people, Julie has grown out her hair amid the ongoing pandemic, which she wore up in an elaborate braid for yesterday’s festivities.

Completing the vibrant look, Julie opted for a pair of dangly gold earrings and a simple pair of metallic strappy stiletto heels.

It comes just one week after Julie stepped out in another stunning ensemble as she attended the Channel Seven’s annual Telethon fundraiser last month. She dressed to impress in a a slinky 1920s-inspired gown which featured extravagant beading detail and a flapper-style fringed skirt. Julie paired the floor-length frock with a simple silver handbag and pulled her hair back into a simple up-do.

“Ready for the Ball,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a photograph of herself and a group of equally well-dressed female friends. However Julie did add that she was missing her partner David Panton, who is in Sydney and unable to enter WA due to the ongoing pandemic.

“You always look amazing. Especially in all shades of pink,” one follower wrote. Another commented: “You are a beautiful lady inside and out.”

While another said: “You ladies looked even more fabulous in real life!!”
