June appears to be a good month for upcoming movies and television shows. After a drama-filled April and action-packed May, music and comedy appear to be the genres stealing the entertainment spotlight this June.
And with winter just around the corner, the cooler season makes for the perfect time to stay indoors with some great new movies and shows.
With some highly acclaimed movies coming in next month, here are the top picks for what you should check out in June.
Ever wondered what the life of a leading creative force in music production was like? Then you’re in luck because the upcoming George Michael documentary gives you an inside look at the singer and his life.
Narrated and co-directed by Michael, George Michael Freedom Uncut offers audiences a behind-the-scenes look at this private and public persona as the late singer, who died in December 2016 aged 53, speaks about his legacy.
The documentary features archival footage and interviews of the singer and his numerous collaborators including Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Mary J. Blige, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Cindy Crawford, and many more.
“George Michael was an inspiring artist whose story deserves to be shared on the big screen globally,” says President of Sony Music Entertainment, Tom Mackay.
His documentary is set to be released in cinemas in Australia on June 22 in honour of the late singer’s birthday.
Candid shots, never-before-seen home videos, and a rare “extraordinary glimpse” into the life of Queen Elizabeth II are just some of the things royal watchers can expect from the BBC’s newest upcoming documentary Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen to mark Her Majesty’s 70th year on the throne.
The 96-year-old has granted the network permission to share footage from her own personal archives including homemade recordings shot by her parents and her late husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
To authenticate the storytelling experience, BBC Studios looked over more than 400 reels and listened to more than 300 of the Queen’s speeches, to make the documentary which is said to be narrated by the Queen’s voice alongside unearthed newsreel
BBC Commissioning Editor for History, Simon Young says audiences can expect this documentary to be an “extraordinary glimpse into a deeply personal side of the Royal Family that is rarely seen”.
The 75-minute programme will debut on BBC One on May 29 days before the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations take place from June 2 to 5.
Another celebrity-based film coming out this June is Baz Luhrmann’s highly-anticipated Elvis biopic.
Starring young Hollywood actor Austin Butler as the King of Rock, alongside Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Elvis takes a look at the darker side of Presley’s fame as the legendary singer struggles with who he is and what the world perceives of him.
As per Luhrmann’s directing style (see Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, and The Great Gatsby) movie watchers can expect big, lavish, over-the-top musical sequences featuring Elvis’s biggest hits, guaranteed to surely get you singing your way out of the cinema.
Elvis made its world premiere on May 25 at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival but will hit theatres in Australia on June 24.
The comedy faced a tragic loss earlier this year with the devastating death of “America’s dad” Bob Saget. Now streaming giant Netflix is giving his fans the ultimate send-off with a tribute special showing a collection of Saget’s life and work.
The special will feature Saget’s former Fuller House co-star John Stamos alongside other comedian big names such as Jim Carrey and Chris Rock, and many more stars.
A Tribute to Bob Saget will be available for streaming on Netflix on June 10 and is part of a larger line-up of pretaped shows of now-deceased stand-up comics.
Fresh off Netflix‘s first-ever comedy festival is comedy queens Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin with Ladies Night Live.
While the comedy festival itself featured more than 300 comedians in 288 shows at more than 35 venues across Los Angeles, the Grace and Frankie co-stars introduce an all-female lineup of comedians guaranteed to keep you laughing all night long.
Their live comedy specials come after rumours of a Grace and Frankie spin-off begins to swirl after the bittersweet season finale of the hit US television show.
While nothing has been formally announced, you can still get an added dose of Tomlin and Fonda and their comedy festival special, available for streaming on Netflix on June 14.
Rowan Atkinson aka Mr Bean is returning to the silver screen with an upcoming mini-series titled Man vs Bee.
The series, co-created by Atkinson, follows a man who finds himself facing off the fuzzy black-and-yellow insect while housesitting a grandiose mansion. As the series synopsis asks us, “Who will win, and what irreparable damage will be done in the process?”
While no official trailer for the new series has been released yet, the show’s promotional poster alludes that chaos is to be expected in expected as we see Atkinson’s character using a metal spatula as a makeshift flyswatter while a fire burns behind him.
