Sarah Ferguson made a triumphant return to the royal limelight when she was invited to attend Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding alongside the rest of the royal family earlier this year – and now she has revealed no-one would be prouder of the Duchess of Sussex than Harry’s late mother Princess Diana.
Fergie, who was close friends with Diana before her tragic death, opened up on what she’d think of both Meghan and Prince William’s wife Catherine in a moving interview on the UK ITV show Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.
Revealing Diana would likely feel pride in how her “wonderful” daughters-in-law have adapted to royal life, she insisted Diana would want to hug both of them and tell them: “You’re doing well.”
The Duchess of York, 59, added that William and Harry are both a credit to her and said: “She’d really just be so proud. Even before they got married, Diana would have been just literally going ‘I can’t believe these boys have done so well’.
“They are such a credit to her… She had this enormous compassion and I honestly think she’d be so proud of the wonderful Meghan and Catherine as well, she’d want to embrace them and say ‘You’re doing well’.”
Elsewhere, she went on to reveal how nervous she was ahead of Meghan and Harry’s wedding – but felt overwhelming gratitude to the couple for inviting her to attend.
Recalling the moment she arrived outside St George’s Chapel to cheers from the crowd, she told the TV show she felt the “old Fergie” was back.
“I felt very honoured and grateful for Harry and Meghan to invite me. That is a big, big point… It was very kind of them and I can’t thank them enough for doing that,” she added. “It was nerve-wracking and I was glad I didn’t trip over with those high heel shoes on.”
Once she heard the crowds cheering and calling her name outside, she said: “It was quite extraordinary. I look around and thought, ‘Are they doing it for me?’ and then some went ‘Fergie’… and it was the old Fergie back and I felt that sense of support from the crowds.”
She took the opportunity to cast aside rumours of a rift with the family as a whole as she went on to heap praise on the Queen, telling hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “Her Majesty knew me from when I was a little naughty aged 10… I can’t thank Her Majesty enough for being so steadfast to me.”
The duchess went on to recall her happiness on the day of her daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding recently, and said she chose to pay tribute to her mother with her hat on the day.
And discussing her relationship with her former husband Andrew, who she still lives with, she added: “What I love about that is that I am different and he’s different.”
When Piers asked her if there was a chance of a re-marriage however, she simply replied: “Piers, get a life!”
