Share:

When it comes to holidaying around Australia, there’s no better way to see our fair country than to hit the open road for an amazing driving holiday. Whether you’re travelling by car, have hooked up a caravan, or are living it up in a motor home, a road trip allows you to set your own pace and take it easy as you cruise the highways and explore the sights along the way. Here, we’re taking a look at Australia’s top five road trips!

1. Great Ocean Road, Victoria

The 12 Apostles in Victoria.

There’s a reason the Great Ocean Road is regarded as the greatest road trip in the country. The scenic drive shows off some of our most beautiful landscapes and wonders. You’ll see the 12 Apostles, native wildlife, gorgeous rainforests and have access to delicious food and local produce along the way.

2. Red Centre Way, Northern Territory

Breathtaking Uluru in the red centre of Australia.

See the heart of Australia on this magnificent drive through the outback. Surrounded by soft red dirt and big open skies, you’ll never be short of things to stop and see throughout this journey. Begin your drive at Alice Springs and circle all the way around Uluru where you can marvel at the stunning natural beauty of our great country. Stop off at historic towns and take in the wonders at ancient Aboriginal rock art sites.

3. The Nullarbor Plain, South Australia and Western Australia

A golden sunset along the road in the Nullarbor.

Kick off your journey in Ceduna, South Australia and head west across the Nullarbor towards Perth. This area might have a reputation for being a barren land but there’s plenty of beauty to be found along the way. You’ll spot kangaroos lounging in the fields of bluebush and wedge-tailed eagles sailing through the sky. In the evening you’ll be treated to stunning sunsets before the night sky fills with some of the most brilliant and brightest stars you’ll ever see.

4. Cairns to Cape Tribulation, Queensland

Swim with the colourful fish at the Great Barrier Reef.

There’s no doubt that tropical North Queensland is one of the most stunning regions in Australia. Home to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, you’ll lose yourself in the lush surroundings and gorgeous wildlife. Veer off the road for a day or two and go snorkeling amongst the vivid coral and sea-life, or take a hike, and perhaps an overnight stay, in the ancient rain forest. When you arrive at Cape Tribulation you’ll be greeted with gorgeous pure white sands and deep blue sea just waiting for you to take a dip in!

3. The Savannah Way, Queensland and the Northern Territory

The pristine Millaa Millaa Falls in Queensland.

If you want to explore the north of Australia the Savannah Way is the road trip for you. It’s the ultimate drive across the country stretching a whopping 3,700km from Cairns to Broom. You’ll see the amazing Undara Lava Tubes along the way, as well as the Boodjamulla National Park and the majestic Millaa Millaa Falls.

Have you ever been on a driving holiday? Which one of these road trips would you like to go on?
