Western Australia is a vast, yet beautiful state, from the gorgeous stretches of white sand to the outback where you see nothing but red dirt for kilometres on end. You could easily spend weeks, if not months exploring Australia’s west, and if you’re planning a holiday that way, the Pilbara is an absolute must.

The region is located in the north of the state and extends some 500,000 square kilometres right across the Great Sandy Desert to the Northern Territory border. Throughout you’ll find three national parks, Millstream-Chichester, Karlamilyi and Karijini, all of which offer different, yet equally beautiful surroundings from rugged gorges to picture-perfect waterfalls and flowing rivers.

The Pilbara is also home to the towns of Port Hedland, Roebourne and Newman, and the famous Burrup Peninsula which is known for its incredible rock engravings. These 10,000 engravings are said to be among the earliest examples of art in the world and are a must-see for anyone in the region.
