This rural city is the commercial centre of East Gippsland and a holiday base for those visiting the Lakes and Wilderness region of Eastern Victoria.
Bairnsdale is located on the banks of the Mitchell River which flows into the nearby Gippsland Lakes. The lake system covers an area of around 354 square kilometres and is renowned for water based recreational activities. Collectively fed by six rivers the lakes and surrounding area is home for a diverse range of wildlife. The town also marks the southern end of the Great Alpine Road that gives all seasons access to the mountain wilderness of East Gippsland.
You can cycle, walk or horse ride along this all-weather trail that extends east from Bairnsdale to the township of Orbost. Ninety-six kilometres in total length, each section passes through an ever changing landscape of farmland and forest. Points of interest and historical sites are marked by information boards.
Bairnsdale is rich in history and many of the heritage listed buildings stand in testament to the early pioneers that established the town.
Whatever your tastebuds desire; Bairnsdale has it covered. Iconic pubs, sporting club venues and restaurants compliment the many smaller cafes, bakeries and coffee shops in and around the CBD.
If it is shopping that takes your fancy then Bairnsdale will not disappoint. Centred with beautiful gardens the shopping strip is a delight.
Bairnsdale is within short distance to a number of National Parks. To the north is the Mitchell River National Park and the mysterious Den of Nargun.
To the north east is the Alpine National Park. This is the largest National Park in Victoria and covers almost all the higher regions of the state. Access is via the Great Alpine Road.
To the east lies Croajingolong National Park. This coastal park abounds in wildlife and wonderful scenery.
