The best places to visit in 2018 if you’re on a budget

With a New Year, comes new travel dreams and a string of New Year’s resolutions to visit more destinations.

But with a world of stunning sights and endless beaches to explore, all boasting some of the most famous 5-star resorts in the world, it can seem like some of your holiday dreams are out of reach.

However, a new study has found a list of the top 10 places for Aussies to visit this year, to get the best for their buck. With everywhere from the Maldives to Seychelles making the list, those dreams of white beaches and crystal blue waters could become reality.

Internet comparison site finder.com.au has listed 10 destinations where the Aussie dollar flourished last year. The site explained: “We compared currencies worldwide to see where the dollar saw the greatest growth in the past year to determine the hottest destinations to visit where your dollars will go the furthest.”

1. Argentina

If you’ve dreamed of seeing the picturesque glacial lakes and Pampas grassland, then this could be your lucky day. The Argentine Peso has been falling for three years in a row now, and that’s not changing. It makes it the perfect place to get your money’s worth when flying from Australia. According to the site, for every $100 spent, you’ll get an extra 312 pesos.

The beautiful nation on West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea is known for its stunning landscapes, secluded beaches and diverse cultures. For every $100 you’ll get an extra 45.64 cedit – and while that roughly equates to a coffee, every little helps on your summer break!

3. Seychelles

You’ve seen the videos of endless white beaches, sea huts and some of the most romantic settings across the world, and with 115 islands clustered together, it’s the perfect place to unwind. Here, for every $100, you’re getting an extra 133.84 Seychellois rupees.

4. Sri Lanka

Famous for its surfing, beautiful beaches, temple ruins and timeless culture, Sri Lanka is a must-see – and what better time than now? The site claims that for every $100, you’re getting an extra 1,282 rupees – enough for an evening meal out.

5. The Maldives

It may have gained a reputation as a top honeymoon spot, but the Maldives continues to be an exclusive and relaxing haven for all ages. The tropical nation in the Indian Ocean has 26 ring-shaped atolls, made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. For every $100, you’re getting an extra MVR116.26 – enough for some ferry rides to see the islands up close.

6. Laos

Nestled between Thailand and Vietnam, this largely untouched country boasts rolling mountains, endless forests and rich culture, the perfect place if you want to escape the daily grind and make some rich memories. For every $100, you’re getting an extra LAK62,172, and with such affordable food and drink once there, it’s a hard one to turn down.

7. Brazil

It’s somewhere you may have dreamed about for years, but now it could be within your grasp. Whether you want to escape into the countryside, or explore Rio de Janeiro, there’s something for everyone. Now, for every $100, you’re getting an extra BRL24.54.

8. Cambodia

If you were keen to see Laos, then Cambodia should be on the list too. See the historical Angkor Wat at sunrise, and visit everything from huge caves to secluded islands in the south. The exchange rate makes it a great time to go, and for every $100 you’re getting an extra KHR28,526 – enough to get you round or even an entrance ticket to a local sight.

9. The Philippines

A huge cluster of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines offers some of the most breathtaking sights in the Western Pacific. An island-hopping tour could open up popular and more untouched islands, while the capital of Manila gives an insight into the local culture of a capital city. For every $100 you’re getting an extra PHP314 – and it can certainly go far if you’re up for some haggling.

10. Hong Kong

If you’re dreaming of more of a city break, then there’s surely nowhere better to tick off the bucket list than Hong Kong. For every $100 you’re getting an extra HKD52.68, and according to the site, this could get you a tour at night with a local guide.
