How to (politely) get as many holiday freebies as possible

From hotel upgrades to complimentary bottles of champagne, here are a few ways to nab yourself some freebies on your next holiday getaway, without feeling guilty.

1. Hotel upgrades

Celebrating a special occasion? Let your hotel, cruise liner or travel agent know because these wonderful celebrations could entitle you to a welcome basket, a voucher or a bottle of celebratory champagne. You never know unless you ask.

2. Attraction entry passes

Sometimes all it takes to get a freebie is to do a little planning. Many museums, galleries and other attractions offer free entry on certain days of the week. If you are in a city and want to pay an attraction a visit, check their website and see what days they offer free entry.

3. Flight upgrades

You might not be upgraded to first class with all the trimmings, but upon checking in at the airport it doesn’t hurt to ask the desk clerk if an upgrade is possible. You might be on the receiving end of a polite ‘No’ but it is possible and worth asking about.

4. Walking tours

One of the best ways to get to know a new city is to walk around and see it from the ground. But if you don’t know where to start or what to look out for, it can be a little overwhelming. Many cities around the world offer free walking tours. Not only is this a great way to get acquainted with your new destination, you’ll be guided by someone in the know who’ll no doubt have some historical information up their sleeve and you might just make a few friends along the way, too.

5. Toiletries

If you find yourself buying small travel-sized toiletries each time you travel, it’s time to make the most of the toiletries available in your hotel room. Even if you decide not to use them, pack them away for your next trip.

What freebies have you managed to get on a holiday? Let us know all about it in the comments section below.
