One man got an unexpected surprise as he enjoyed a quiet, relaxing kayak in New Zealand, when he was slapped in the face with an octopus by a pretty angry seal. If this story sounds a bit far-fetched or hard to believe, don’t worry, as there’s some fairly insane video evidence.
New Zealander Kyle Mulinder was minding his own business with a few friends when he found himself in a sticky situation with two angry sea animals.
The adrenaline junkie was just off the coast of Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island on a work trip when the bizarre incident took place. The group of kayakers were testing out new GoPro devices when they caught the completely random incident on one of their action cameras.

After spotting a male seal fighting an octopus a bit further in the distance, Mulinder soon saw the pair of sea creatures heading his way. Without as much as a warning, the seal emerged out of the sea and vigorously threw the octopus at his face.
After being launched at a man’s head, the octopus was quick to find refuge by sticking itself to the side of the vessel until the guide of the tour helped to pry it off. Mulinder shot the camera a shocked look before leaning over and attempting to pry the octopus from the side of the kayak.
The hilarious video has done the rounds online with viewers impressed that such an unbelievable incident was caught on camera. One user commented on Mulinder’s personal post saying what we were all thinking: “100% the funniest thing I’ve seen all week. Your sacrifice to the field of mollusc-based slapstick is greatly appreciated, sir!”
Mulinder posted the video on his Instagram @barekiwi with the caption: “Wrong place, right time. Yes I got slapped in the face with an octopus by the seal! I know crazy right.”
The New Zealand local shares his adventurous lifestyle on his popular Instagram page. However, despite his already rich list of unique experiences, Mulinder and the rest of his daring team all seemed shocked by the unique event.
Fortunately for everyone, the incident was caught on camera because this really is a story you need to see to believe!
