If the cost of aged care is starting to feel overwhelming, there is some reassuring news – you may not have to carry the burden alone.
Many older Australians are unaware that the government offers Financial Hardship Assistance, a support program designed to reduce – or even cover – aged care fees for those doing it tough.
And with aged care costs rising alongside everyday living expenses, it’s becoming more relevant than ever.
Financial Hardship Assistance is a government-funded program that helps eligible older Australians who can’t afford their aged care costs.
Importantly, it’s not a loan – you don’t have to pay it back.
It can help with:
In-home care costs (under Support at Home or Home Care Packages)
Residential aged care fees, including respite care
If approved, the government may pay some or all of your fees, easing the financial pressure and allowing you to focus on your care and wellbeing.
You may qualify if:
You’re finding it difficult to pay your aged care fees
You rely mainly on the Age Pension or a low income
You have limited savings or assets
You’re left with very little after covering everyday essentials like food, bills and medical costs
Your circumstances have recently changed (for example, illness, loss of a partner, or unexpected expenses)
Every application is assessed individually, so even if you’re unsure, it’s worth asking the question.
According to recent data, more than 1.4 million Australians receive aged care services, and demand is expected to keep rising as the population ages. At the same time, cost-of-living pressures are making it harder for many retirees to keep up with fees.
That’s why support like this exists – to ensure people don’t miss out on care simply because of financial stress.
The process is straightforward:
Contact Services Australia and ask to speak with an Aged Care Services Officer
Complete an application detailing your income, assets and expenses
Provide supporting documents if requested (such as bank statements or bills)
Let your aged care provider know you’ve applied
While your application is being assessed, your provider must continue your care and cannot charge fees.
Most applications are processed within 28 days.
Before filling in the form, jot down your regular expenses – groceries, utilities, medications. You don’t need exact figures, just a clear picture of where your money goes.
It makes the process quicker and helps show your true financial position.
If the process feels daunting, support is available. Aged care advocates and financial counsellors can guide you through your options and help ensure your voice is heard.
Because at the end of the day, aged care should be about dignity, comfort and choice – not financial stress.
