Q: I’m a 69-year-old woman and love my husband dearly but when having sex, I can never climax, why are there tablets for men and nothing for women?
I love this question as it is such an important one! I too share your frustration at not having access to approved Viagra for women. Unfortunately, we are conditioned in society to believe that men can, and should enjoy sex through the later years of life yet women should not want the same. Which, as we all know, is definitely not true! I have so many female clients over the age of 60 who say they have never felt sexier, more sensual and more turned on, they just sometimes need a little help to get it going.
Whilst we do know the positive benefits hormone replacement therapy can have for some women, and oestrogen can help with vaginal dryness or thinning of the vaginal walls, unfortunately, none increase libido or the ability to climax. Some of my clients have had great results from testosterone yet the negative side effects can be extreme, including increased body hair, mood changes, acne and enlarged genitalia.
But did you know that there are certain foods that increase your libido, enhance your performance in bed, and even prolong your sexual encounters? Specific foods provide the fuel for a more pleasurable intimate experience, and conversely, it’s good to be aware that certain enjoyable foods may actually hinder the pre-coital ambience.
So, when preparing for your next sensual encounter with your husband, opt for foods that promote circulation, and avoid those high in salt, fat, or sugar. Sex can be quite the cardiovascular activity, so avoid anything with a high-fat content that can decrease circulation and slow you down.
Foods high in antioxidants and flavonoids can do wonders for your performance in the bedroom, as these compounds have a remarkable ability to promote circulation. Apples, strawberries, blueberries, citrus fruits, and cherries are not only mouthwatering but also contain just the right properties to lower blood pressure.
Additionally, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids like fish, nuts, and seeds are heart-healthy and improve circulation. So, fuel yourself with those omega-3s, vitamin C, and iron before you and your husband get between the sheets.
And don’t forget the foods that are aphrodisiacs! Oysters contain all the zinc needed to improve blood flow right to where you want it. Food that looks like sex can actually help with sex, so ginger, figs, avocados and bananas (which boost testosterone) can aid in increasing your libido and bringing yourself to orgasm. Other foods proven to help with your sex drive include paprika, garlic, celery, grapefruit, pomegranate, pineapple – and of course our favourites – dark chocolate and red wine (in moderation).
The best and most exciting advice I can give is to keep having sex, including trying new positions! The beautiful thing about our libido, arousal and ability to climax is the more we use it, the more stimulation and sensation we create.
Much love and desire, Polly. Xo
