The world population was 4.8 billion and life expectancy was 74 years old.

In pop culture news, the Academy Award for Best Picture was Amadeus. Other popular films of the year included, The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, The Color Purple and Rocky IV. What was your favourite film?

Popular TV shows from the year were The Crosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers and Dallas.

As well, the number one hit single of the year on the Billboard Hot 100 was “Careless Whisper” by Wham! featuring George Michael, followed by “Like a Virgin” by Madonna and “What Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham! The Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year went to “What’s Love Got to Do With It”. Do you remember singing along to these tracks?

As well, Live Aid pop concerts were held around the world to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans.  It was kicked off in London at Wembley Stadium with Prince Charles and Princess Diana who officially opened the Live Aid concerts. It was continued in Philadelphia and other arenas. It is regarded as a “super concert” linked globally with more than a billion viewers from 110 nations. Do you remember tuning in to watch this concert?
