Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, had mastered many things in his life. The consort to the late Queen Elizabeth was a noted naval officer in World War II, was patron of over 800 charities and helped popularise horse-carriage racing.

And now one of his grandsons has revealed he was an expert at cooking an unusual dish on his barbeque.

While the Duke’s gift for barbeque cooking was well known, Prince Harry has revealed he also was an expert at cooking spaghetti bolognese over an outdoor grill.

The details come from Harry’s infamous memoir Spare where he reminisces about the time the royals were enjoying their annual holiday in Balmoral.

“Normally I’d beg him to make a pot of his specialty, spaghetti Bolognese. This night, for some reason, I didn’t,” Harry said.

“He stood amid a thick cloud of smoke, tears streaming from his eyes.

“As the fillets of venison sizzled, he turned them with a huge pair of tongs, then put on a loop of Cumberland sausages.”

Despite his unusual cooking techniques, the Duke was considered an expert griller in the Royal Family and no one was allowed to take his place behind the barbeque.

In a 2021 tribute program, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, Prince William said the late Duke of Edinburgh was the one cooking at every family barbeque.

“We go on barbecues and there’s no chef, there’s not anyone else,” he said.

“He’s definitely a dab hand at the barbecue.”

Surprising the Duke’s talents also bent toward the artistic, as revealed by Princess Eugenie earlier in the year.

The Princess was reminiscing about a thoughtful wedding gift bestowed upon her by her grandfather on her special day in 2018.

Prince Philip, known for his various hobbies, including a lesser-known love for painting, gifted Eugenie a handmade painting of flowers.

“It was so nice, it’s now sitting in my house in London and I’m so proud of it, you know?” she said.

While Philip was widely recognised for his dedication to public service, military achievements, and love for carriage driving, his artistic side was a more private aspect of his life.
