Reports emerge revealing the cause of comedian Cal Wilson’s sudden death

The world of comedy was left in shock and sorrow when the news of beloved comedian Cal Wilson’s sudden passing at the age of 53 broke recently.

Wilson’s passing was confirmed by Token Artists management who revealed that she died after a “short illness” with her family by her side.

“We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. She was 53 years old,” the statement read.

“Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last twenty years. Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.”

As fans and those close to Wilson come to terms with her passing it can now be revealed that the beloved comedian died of a “rare and aggressive form of cancer”, as reported by news outlets such as the ABC and The Sydney Morning Herald.

As news broke of her passing on Wednesday, October 11, social media was quickly flooded with tributes and condolences from fans, fellow comedians, and celebrities, who shared their fondest memories and expressed their sorrow.

Born on October 5, 1970, in Christchurch, New Zealand, Wilson embarked on her journey in the entertainment industry after making a move to Melbourne in 2003. Her career took off as she took a prominent role in the highly regarded sketch show, Skithouse.

Her comedic talent rapidly propelled her to become one of Australia’s most celebrated comedians, with appearances on popular programs like Good News Week, Would I Lie To You?, and even headlining her own stand-up special on Netflix.

Wilson made a significant impact on the Melbourne Comedy Festival, accumulating an impressive record of 14 appearances and contributing as a respected member of the festival’s board.

More recently, she charmed audiences as the co-host of The Great Australian Bake Off on Foxtel, a project she was actively involved in when she first found herself hospitalised.

Her versatility was evident as she took on the role of host on ABC’s Sleuth 101, and she had an extensive list of appearances on various shows, including The Project, Celebrity Name Game, Show Me the Movie!, Would I Lie to You? Australia, Have You Been Paying Attention?, Hughesy We Have a Problem, Slide Show, Rove Live, Dancing with the Stars, The Wedge, and Kitty Is Not a Cat.

Wilson is survived by her husband Chris and son Digby.
