Queensland Police are investigating the suspicious deaths of two people who were found with significant injuries at a caravan park in the state’s Gladstone region on Thursday.

At around 5pm police were called to the scene at Calliope Caravan Park, around 25 kilometres south-west of Gladstone, after a 63-year-old man was found outside his caravan with head injuries. He was transported to the nearby Gladstone Hospital but died due to the extent of his injuries.

After further investigations the body of a 60-year-old woman, who was known to the first man, was discovered inside a nearby caravan also with significant injuries.

Calliope Caravan Park yard worker Christopher March told Starts at 60 the man was a long-term resident and had lived at the park for around 30 years, while the woman had lived there for around 25 years.

He could not confirm whether or not they were in a relationship, but claimed the pair had been seen talking quite regularly and lived separately.

Detectives are now questioning a 64-year-old male, who was taken into custody on Thursday night, in relation to their deaths. Queensland police confirmed to Starts at 60 that a weapon has been found, but would not disclose what kind.

According to police, the incident is said to have occurred just prior to the victims being found, however, further investigations are still underway.

“Police and emergency services were called after a resident of the caravan park located the deceased man with a significant head trauma,” Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said in a statement released on Friday morning.

“Our investigations to date indicate the incidents may have occurred sometime between 3.30 and 4.30pm yesterday and we are appealing for anyone who may have noticed or heard something or seen anyone suspicious, or something out of the ordinary to contact us.”

Crime scenes have been established at both caravan sites with crime officers investigating the incident and canvasing the caravan park.

A police investigation centre has also been set up at the Gladstone Police Station with detectives from the homicide investigation unit to to arrive on Friday to assist the local police.
