Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced Queenslanders aged over 60 who have not received a vaccine will now be able to get their hands on a Pfizer jab. Previously over-60s were only allowed to book in for the AstraZeneca jab, which has been linked to a rare blood clotting disorder.

Palaszczuk broke the exciting news in a video on Wednesday morning, saying the rollout will start from this weekend: “Many seniors over 60 have been speaking to me about needing a choice of vaccine, well from this weekend you can access the Pfizer vaccine.

“This is excellent news which I know that you will be very happy about.”

Fellow Queenslanders welcomed the news, with one writing: “It’s about time – I tried to get Pfizer but nobody would give to me as I am over 60 years old. I had bad reaction to flu and pneumonia vaccine and my doctor suggested to have Pfizer.”

Another added: “Great decision hopefully now more will get the vax.” And a third commented: “Thank you for giving the over 60s a choice.”

And Queensland isn’t the only state to be implementing the Pfizer vaccine across all age groups. On Tuesday, Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan announced that those aged 60 and over will be eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine from Monday next week.

“People aged 60 and over who have already had a first dose of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine should still have their second dose of AstraZeneca, as different vaccines cannot be mixed,” McGowan said in a press conference at the time.

“To date, more than 84 per cent of people aged 60 and older have received their first doses, and more than 60 per cent of people aged 60 and older are fully vaccinated.

“We want to get these numbers up and ensure they get vaccinated as a priority … because they are more vulnerable to death or illness from Covid-19,” he said.

To date, more than 51 per cent of people aged between 60 and 64 are fully vaccinated, and more than 59 per cent of people aged between 65 and 70 are fully vaccinated. You can find more vaccination statistics here.
