In an unexpected move, Kensington Palace has issued a rare statement addressing mounting concerns regarding the state of Princess Catherine’s well-being.
Concerns escalated earlier this week after Catherine’s husband, Prince William, abruptly withdrew from a royal engagement, citing a “personal matter”, the move triggering rampant speculation and an outpouring of concern from the public.
The Prince was slated to deliver a reading at a memorial service for Greece’s King Constantine II, who was not only his godfather but also a close friend of his father, King Charles III.
William reportedly personally apologised to the Greek royal family ahead of the event.
Despite reassurances this week from royal aides that Princess Catherine is “doing well”, the shroud of secrecy that has veiled the details of her recent surgery and ongoing recuperation, has only added fuel to the growing speculation.
In an effort to allay public concerns, a spokesperson for Catherine issued another statement on Thursday, February 29, stating, “We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter and Kensington Palace would only be providing updates when something was significant.”
The spokesperson was sure to state again that Princess Catherine is “doing well”.
While the recent updates from the Palace will no doubt help alleviate some of the public’s concerns, the lack of specific information about the nature of her health issues and the exact details of her surgery has left the public in the dark, fostering a sense of unease among well-wishers.
Royal Historian Kelly Swaby recently offered some insight into why the public has been provided with so many updates regarding King Charles but when it comes to Princess Catherine there seems to be radio silence.
“The Waleses are known for guarding their privacy, so it’s not surprised me how [they] have handled it,” she told 9Honey.
“I do think somebody maybe should have thought through their statement a bit more … because that did spur rumour and speculation, it didn’t help things.”
In a more “blunt” assessment, Swaby explained that “the King is the only constitutionally important person in the royal family”.
“He’s the one who has the official role in the family and because of his role as Head of States, he’s the only person in the world who can appoint the British Prime Minister and sign British laws into acts,” she continued.
“He’s important, and I feel like the approach kind of reflects how important he is.
“I think it also shows a certain level of respect as well [that] the public have the right to know what is going on with their Head of State.
“Whereas the Princess of Wales doesn’t hold a constitutional role, therefore, I don’t think we necessarily need to know as much.”
As the world awaits further updates on Princess Catherine’s health, the Palace’s decision to break its silence underscores the delicate balance between maintaining the Royal Family’s privacy and addressing the legitimate concerns of a caring public.
Until then, well-wishers and royal enthusiasts remain in suspense, hoping for positive news about the beloved Princess’s recovery.
