Guitarist Jorge Santana, the younger brother of Carlos Santana, has died aged 68.
Carlos announced his brother’s death on Facebook on Friday. It is believed he passed away on Thursday.
He wrote: “We take time to celebrate the magnificent spirit of our beloved brother, Jorge,” Carlos Santana wrote.
“He transitioned unto the realm of light that cast no shadow the eyes of my heart clearly see him right in between our glorious and magnificent mother Josefina and our father Jose.”
Jorge was best known for his famous guitar rifts on his band Malo’s 1972 hit ‘Suavecito’ which transformed the song into a Chicano anthem. He died of natural causes, his family confirmed.
Malo made three albums before a highly publicised breakup. Jorge later played with the New York-based salsa collective Fania All-Stars, before embarking on a solo career. He joined his brother Carlos on tour in 1993.
Fans shared their condolences on Carlos’ Facebook post, leaving tributes to Jorge and his music.
One commented: My deepest and most heartfelt sorrow for the heartbreaking loss of your beloved brother. I will always remember the sweet sound of beautiful Suavacito. He’s playing in heaven now. May he rest in peace in God’s loving care. My thought and prayers are with all of you.”
While another added: “Our hearts are heavy and we pass along many blessings and positive thoughts for your family … my love played Suavecito for our first dance his music and all the music you both have created holds a special place in our hearts forever”
