As a princess then monarch, nearly every aspect of Queen Elizabeth’s life was scrutinised, from what she ate to where she holidayed. While her aversion to garlic was well known, a royal chef has revealed the surprising food addiction she shared with many people across the world.

In an interview with Hello magazine, former royal chef Darren McGrady revealed all when he spoke about Queen Elizabeth’s endearing eating habits, explaining she had a serious “sweet tooth.”

With over 15 years experience as personal chef to both the late Queen and Princess Diana, McGrady had intimate knowledge of the Royal Family’s eating preferences and said that when it came to desserts, the beloved monarch would always favour anything with chocolate, though she also enjoyed other treats during her daily afternoon tea.

“She is absolutely a chocoholic,” McGrady said.

“Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she would choose, especially chocolate perfection pie.”

The former chef added that the chocolate addiction extended to her biscuit habit too, saying Chocolate Bath Olivers was her preferred choice when he still worked for the family.

But her favourite cake was chocolate biscuit cake, a treat so beloved by the late Queen that any leftovers were strictly kept back for the her consumption only.

McGrady explained that during his tenure as a royal chef, all leftover cakes would be sent down by the Royal Family once afternoon tea had finished and were then shared out amongst the staff.

All, except for the infamous chocolate biscuit cake.

“The chocolate biscuit cake is different,” he explained.

“She has a little slice. It comes down to the kitchen and then we keep it safe because it has to go up again tomorrow.

“And it goes up again and again and again and again every day until it’s all gone.”

Not everyone in the Royal Family shared the beloved monarch’s sweet tooth.

Prince Harry has revealed that he favours savoury foods and looked forward to one special meal made by the late Prince Phillip each summer.

The details come from Harry’s infamous memoir Spare where he reminisces about the time the royals were enjoying their annual holiday in Balmoral.

“Normally I’d beg him to make a pot of his specialty, spaghetti Bolognese. This night, for some reason, I didn’t,” Harry said.

Despite his unusual cooking techniques, the Duke was considered an expert griller in the Royal Family and no one was allowed to take his place behind the grill.
