The wildest red carpet looks from the youth of today at this year’s VMAs

This year’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) featured a star-studded lineup of contemporary artists as well as up-and-coming musicians. From industry giants like Cyndi Lauper and Taylor Swift to rising pop icons like Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, the red carpet suffered no shortage of glittering looks.

However, it only took us all of five minutes to realise that this year’s looks are… less than. From immodest scraps of fabric to layers of mismatched pieces, the youth of today seem determined to manufacture a viral moment by showing skin and relying on absurdity instead of true art.

Have a look at some of the most memorable (for better or worse) looks this year and share your thoughts with a friend or find us on Facebook!

Cyndi Lauper

We’re starting off strong with Cyndi Lauper, whose eccentric black-and-white powersuit stands as one of the only good looks of the evening. This abstract outfit intentionally confuses the eye while remaining chic and sophisticated.

Girls just wanna have fun, it seems, but it looks like some celebrity guests are having too much fun tonight…

Paris Hilton

Hilton’s look appears to be an attempt at a deconstructed disco piece framed by a heavy choker and shaped into a classic hourglass figure. However, between a head of wet hair and the jagged gaps in her outfit, it just looks unpolished and unfinished.

As Hilton herself might say, not so hot.

Halle Bailey

The Little Mermaid star thought to make waves on the red carpet, but instead was more of a gentle lap upon the shore. The stunning fabric that composes her dress appears to be intentionally frayed at the bottom, but it seems more like a tripping hazard than anything else.

The Kid Laroi

The only Australian to represent on the VMAs red carpet this year was The Kid Laroi and at the very least, he erred on the side of caution. With four layers of clothing on top and a pair of oversized denim jeans, we’re hoping the air-conditioning in the venue is stronger than his look.

Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X has made a career out of making headlines from all the wrong things and his latest appearance at the VMAs is no different.

This pink-and-white mock Formula 1 driver getup looks more like a knock-off Power Rangers suit with a funny-looking helmet and we have to wonder what exactly the inspiration behind this was.
