An 5.8 magnitude earthquake has rocked Melbourne and its surrounds this morning. At 9.15am the earthquake shook Victoria with the epicentre in the Alpine National Park around Mansfield. The tremor was felt across Victoria. Aftershocks are expected in the following hours and days.

The first aftershock followed approximately 15 minutes after the original earthquake, according to reports from residents in Merrijig, The Guardian reports.

The most severe impacts seem to have been cracks in paths and floors, as well as a jostling of shelves and objects from their positions in homes and businesses across Victoria, as well as the Australian Capital Territory, southern New South Wales and southern South Australia.

Scott Morrison has addressed the travelling media in regard to the earthquake, from Washington. He has expressed gratitude that thus far, the reports he has seen don’t detail “serious injuries, or anything of that nature”, and pledged the Federal Government’s support for those impacted, by way of Australian Defence Force personnel “or others” as necessary.
