It’s never easy to celebrate important life moments without our loved ones, but young conservationist Bindi Irwin, who got engaged earlier this week, has now revealed how she plans to honour the memory of her late father, Steve Irwin, at her upcoming wedding.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in her first interview since her engagement, the 21-year-old said that she would like her younger brother Robert, 15, to step into the role that would have otherwise been filled by her famous father and accompany her down the aisle.

“I think that for me, it’ll be really important that Robert walks me down the aisle,” she said. “That’s something that I really want to do.”

Bindi said her younger brother “has been such a big part” of her life, adding: “… he’s always stepped up and been the one to give me a hug when I need it and encourage me forward in life.

“So he will definitely be the one to walk me down the aisle when the time comes, and I think that will make it really special,” she said. “And I think that’s what dad would have wanted as well.”

The wildlife conservationist also revealed she would share the father-daughter dance with her mother Terri.

Meanwhile, speaking of her engagement, Bindi admitted that while “it was so incredibly special”, at the same time it was “bittersweet”.

“… there’s people who I really wish could be here today for this time in my life. Particularly my dad.”

Steve – commonly known as The Crocodile Hunter – was killed in 2006 in the now infamous incident at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, Queensland, when he was pierced through the heart by a sting ray barb while filming for TV series Ocean’s Deadliest.

Bindi announced her engagement to long-term boyfriend Chandler Powell, 22, on Wednesday. The 21-year-old shared the exciting news on social media, revealing her boyfriend of six years had gotten down on one knee as she marked her birthday among family and friends at Australia Zoo.

Following the proposal, Bindi shared several photographs from the “whirlwind” day on Instagram, showing off her stunning diamond ring.
