Star and activist Michael J. Fox has admitted it is getting “hard” to keep his sense of humour “intact” while battling the ongoing effects of Parkinson’s disease.
The Family Ties star was diagnosed with the disease in 1991, which causes uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and co-ordination.
Since his diagnosis, the 63 year old has established the Michael J Fox Foundation, which has gone on to fund $US2 billion ($A3.1 billion) worth of research in an effort to find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease.
While attending the foundation’s annual gala on November 16, the Spin City actor admitted it was “hard” for him to laugh but said he had to try to find the fun in things.
“It’s hard for me. But I gotta keep it intact,” he told People magazine.
Many stars were on hand to support Fox and his achievements at the gala, including Fleetwood Mac star, Stevie Nicks.
“I can’t believe, a lot of these people I’ve known for years and years, they’re so kind to me,” Fox said.
“I think because they see an opportunity for a win, for a big advancement, and that’s what we’re working toward.”
But it is not all doom and gloom from Fox, as he has expressed optimism for the future despite his ongoing health challenges.
Speaking at the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s event, Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s earlier this year, Fox spoke about the positive things in his life as well as the difficulties.
“You know, my daughter’s getting married too … good things are happening, and life is good. And so it’s been a good year, for sure,” he told People Magazine.
Attributing his resilience to the unwavering support of his wife, Tracy Pollan, and his family, along with his dedicated team, Fox highlighted the importance of their encouragement in overcoming recent challenges.
“With the help of family, with the help of people that I work with, I’ve been able to meet those challenges and go beyond them and do new things,” Fox said.
“And the whole thing is just keep having new experiences, whether it’s experiences that push forward, what we’re trying to do and our mission with foundation.”
