Lovehoney’s annual Sex Map has delivered plenty of laughs, but one surprising finding could strike a chord with older Australians.
IF your suburb has ever been famous for a giant pineapple, a football team or a country bakery, here’s another claim to fame you probably didn’t see coming.
Online sexual wellness retailer Lovehoney has released its annual Sex Map, revealing which Australian postcodes purchased the most bedroom products per person over the past year.
Before anyone blushes, it’s worth pointing out this isn’t a measure of Australia’s love lives. The rankings are based on anonymous customer purchases through Lovehoney’s online store, making it more a snapshot of shopping habits than romance.
Even so, the results make for entertaining reading.
The southeast Queensland suburb of Ripley has claimed the title of Australia’s “sexiest” suburb after recording the highest purchases per capita across Lovehoney’s range.
It wasn’t just the overall crown either. Ripley also collected a string of category awards, leading the nation in purchases of lubricants, bondage products, realistic toys, lingerie, male pleasure products and other toys.
Queensland performed strongly overall, placing four suburbs in Australia’s national top 10. Alongside Ripley were Calliope, Hermit Park and Newtown, highlighting the Sunshine State’s strong showing.
Elsewhere, Lowood earned the title of Australia’s “Most Otherworldly City” after recording the highest purchases of fantasy-themed products per capita.
According to Lovehoney, interest in that category has surged dramatically over the past year, with fantasy toy sales increasing by 244 per cent and related online searches climbing by more than 700 per cent.
The retailer’s data also ranked states and territories based on purchases per capita, with the Australian Capital Territory taking top spot ahead of Tasmania and Queensland.
One finding stood out above all the others. Lovehoney’s Enjoy Water-Based Lubricant was the retailer’s top-selling product in every Australian state and territory.
While that might raise a smile, it also highlights an important aspect of sexual wellness. Lubricants are commonly recommended to help relieve vaginal dryness, which becomes more common after menopause, helping many women maintain comfort and intimacy.
Another interesting trend was where some of the highest-ranking locations were found. Alongside regional Queensland towns, retirement and sea-change destinations such as Bargara in Queensland, Mandurah in Western Australia, and Tasmania’s Sorell and Howrah also featured strongly in the broader rankings.
While Lovehoney’s anonymous sales data doesn’t reveal customers’ ages, it suggests Australians are embracing sexual wellness well into later life.
Of course, no-one should read too much into the numbers, as the results reflect purchasing behaviour from one retailer rather than broader measures of Australians’ private lives.
Still, there’s something undeniably fun about seeing which towns and suburbs embrace the annual rankings.
