Acclaimed Ghostbusters filmmaker Ivan Reitman dies, age 75

Ivan Reitman, the legendary filmmaker behind hit movies such as Ghostbusters and Kindergarten Cop has sadly passed away, age 75.

Reitman passed away peacefully in his sleep in his California home on Saturday, February 12,  his family confirmed in a statement.

“Our family is grieving the unexpected loss of a husband, father, and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life,” the statement said.

“We take comfort that his work as a filmmaker brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will remember him always.”

Reitman’s son, Jason Reitman, who is also a popular filmmaker, took to Instagram to pay tribute to his late father.

“I’ve lost my hero. All I want in the world is the chance to tell my father one more story. He came from a family of survivors and turned his legacy into laughter. Thank you for the many messages of kindness. Please enjoy his movies and remember his storytelling gifts. Nothing would make him happier,” he wrote.

Fans and entertainment identities alike left their condolences on the Instagram post over the loss of the iconic filmmaker and father.

Comedian Paul Scheer sent his love to the Reitman family.

“Sending you and your family so much love. His legacy will live on thru all the people he affected with his work.”

“Terribly, terribly sorry to hear this heartbreaking news. Planning on an Ivan Reitman movie marathon tonight,” one fan wrote.

Comedian and Marvel star Kumail Nanjiani attributed Reitman’s work to inspiring him to pursue comedy.

“If it wasn’t for him, I would have never become a comedian. A wonderful man who made life changing films.”

“What a beautiful thing, watching you both present “Afterlife” at the theatre he took you as a kid. Hero to us all indeed.”

Reitman is best known for his comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s. His most notable directorial efforts include 1979’s Meatballs, his work with Bill Murray on Stripes and the Ghostbuster series, as well as Twins and Kindergarten Cop.

Reitman is survived by his wife Geneviève Robert and three children Jason, Catherine and Caroline.
