She is one of the biggest names in Hollywood thanks to huge roles such as Donna in Mamma Mia! and Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, but Meryl Streep’s latest part in Mary Poppins Returns sees her take on something a little different.
The Oscar winning actress plays Topsy, the eccentric cousin of flying nanny Mary Poppins, in the upcoming blockbuster sequel, and she put on a demure display at the London premiere of the movie on Wednesday night.
Meryl looked effortlessly chic as she wrapped up against the bitter winter weather in the UK’s capital, wearing an elegant A-line black skirt which featured a white pattern around the hemline, with a pair of sheer black pantyhose underneath.
The 69-year-old star completed the classic look with a black wool blazer embellished with bold white-stitching, a small black clutch bag and an edgy pair of pointed heeled court shoes with a studded toe. Meryl kept her make up simple and chic with a pop of pink lipstick, while her blonde hair hung loosely over her shoulders.
Meryl stars alongside Emily Blunt in the sequel to the 1964 classic, stepping into the shoes of Julie Andrews who made the role world famous. The 35-year-old British actress looked incredible in a blue silk floor-length gown at the premiere, as she posed alongside Meryl and their co-stars at the iconic Royal Albert Hall.
Earlier this month Emily posed alongside acting legend Dick Van Dyke at the Los Angeles premiere, as the 92-year-old is set to make a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns, having played the roles of Bert and Mr Dawes Senior.
In the modern reimagining Van Dyke makes an appearance as Mr. Dawes Jr. in the upcoming film, the son of the banker he played in the first film and, no doubt to the delight of his fans, the beloved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star is also expected to sing and dance in the sequel.
Mary is set to inspire all over again when Mary Poppins Returns hit cinemas in Australia on New Year’s Day, and judging by the trailer it’s going to be just as enjoyable and enchanting as the original movie.
The movie is set in the 1930s and follows the loveable nanny as she returns to the iconic house on Cherry Tree Lane in London. Michael and Jane Banks are all grown up and there’s a new generation of kids living in the house, with Michael’s son Georgie excitedly bursting through the front door with news for his father and Aunt Jane after his kite “got caught on a nanny”.
While Julie Andrews won’t be reprising her iconic role, she will appear as Michael and Jane’s housekeeper in the sequel. Some familiar faces from the first film make a return, as well as a number of new characters played by some big names.
