How to find shoes that look and feel great

Selecting a pair of Homyped shoes was definitely not what I remember from yesteryear! Upon walking into my local pharmacy* in Brisbane, I was presented with a vibrant display of Homyped shoes ranging from comfy slippers, casual slip-ons and thong styles, to runners, stylish walking shoes and elegant bejewelled sandals. There’s classic, formal dress shoes and even the latest style leather ankle boots.

This vast range of well-manufactured footwear was very much a welcome surprise, especially as there was also a beautiful assortment of colours to choose from.

I was assisted by an attentive and thoughtful saleswoman, who went out of her way to make my shopping experience the best possible, happily seeking out size, style and colour combinations and ensuring I had the best fit so any purchase made was the perfect choice for my needs.

I eventually settled on the Barbi style for its eye-catching deep maroon colour and elegant styling.

To be honest, it was hard choosing one style over the other – I ended up trying on several pairs as the range was so extensive, but eventually decided on the Barbi because they seemed to be perfect for either exploring close to home or travelling to discover places further afield.

The features I liked best were the:

  • soft leather upper and lining
  • removable footbed to enable the use of full-length or regular orthotics
  • contoured lining for arch support and to cradle the foot to suit any form of walking
  • angled strap across the instep (being Velcro rather than a fiddly button-up style, this made all the easier to adjust and fasten)
  • three slender inlays resembling snake or crocodile skin in a classy wave pattern down the toe, another on the fastening strap and the final one along the top back rim where the shoe hugs your skin (it was the biggest surprise to see such stylish detailing on what used to be thought of as mere walking shoes for the older generation!)
  • decent heel of approximately 2.5 centimetres (1 inch), graduating slowly along the base for added height, and
  • sole for excellent grip in wet weather.

The Barbi has proved to be extremely comfortable during long walks, while also classy enough to wear out to dinner or a more formal occasion.

A current trip to Melbourne was a great opportunity to try them out and they were so comfortable and versatile that I didn’t have to pack as much in my suitcase – always a win-win in my book!

Not only that, but I’ve received a few compliments from passersby along the way, which put an extra spring in my step. I would recommend this style for those with a narrow foot as they are quite snug around the toes, and a thin pair of dress socks is the perfect accompaniment.

I certainly wouldn’t rule out Homyped for other foot shapes as they seemed to have an option for everyone! Plus their shoes come in a variety of width fittings with adjustable straps for a comfortable and secure fit.

Homyped recommend visiting your nearest pharmacy for a professional fitting to find our your size and width fitting, but you can also download and print their handy foot sizing guide to measure your foot at home, then buy your preferred pair online.

They even provide a range to suit people living with diabetes to ensure their feet are looked after because of the high risk of amputation in the event of a foot injury.

Although rather more expensive than my usual choice in shoes, the excellent quality, great workmanship, comfort and durability (importantly, without sacrificing on style) won my vote hands down. I expect them to last for many years and look forward to showing them off to both friends and admirers I may pass on my travels.
