Trends for baby names come and go with traditional options the top choice for many Aussie’s throughout 2018.
Although some have opted for more unique names such as Bylan and Chavelle, it seems most wanted to stick with commonly known names last year.
Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria has revealed the most popular names for the state in 2018 with a some staying in the top 10 for a number of years in a row.
In Victoria at least, Oliver was dubbed the favourite choice for boys, while Olivia took out number one position for girls. Oliver was chosen a whopping 507 times and Olivia 374.
This was followed by Jack, William, Noah and Thomas for males and Charlotte, Amelia, Mia and Ava with females.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Henry, Charlie and Max also make an appearance in the top 10, while Chloe, Matilda and Isla were also hot options.
Speaking to radio station 3AW this week, Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria director and registrar James Lawson said for the most case, the range of names have changed quite significantly over the past 50 years.
“Despite the diversity in names across the spectrum, the top male and female names are very similar,” he explained.
“There’s a lot more diversity of names now compared to 50 years ago – for the boys, there were 507 Oliver’s but in 1968 there were 1,408 David’s to make the top.”
Although other Australian states and territories are yet to release the top baby names for 2018, if 2017 is anything to go by, the results won’t differ much from Victoria.
In Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia in 2017 Charlotte and Oliver were the top choices of baby names.
While in Western Australia Oliver was also the top boys names for 2017, but Isla was number one for girls.
Although traditional names are the prime option for parents at the moment, others have opted for bogan names with unique spellings that may have never been heard of before.
Kidspot recently released a list of the most popular bogan names and some may surprise even the most creative of types.
Coming in at the top position was Bylan followed closely by Chavelle in second place and Carridyn in third.
Next was Espirit which is the French word for spirit, and rounding off the top five was Hairry, similar to the more commonly known Harry.
