We assume those who work with animals can deal with any mishaps that come their way. But one dog-loving vet nurse has revealed that is not the case and shared the one dog breed she dreads working with, and many dog owners on social media have backed up her claim.
Eve, known as eve_the_veterinary_nurse uploaded a video on TikTok and explained why she was scared of this specific breed of dog, making sure to clarify that she still “loves all breeds.”
However, she was “extra cautious” when working with one breed and said they were not the typical dogs that people fear such as rottweilers or German shepherds.
“It’s the border collie, and you can’t tell me otherwise,” she said.
The English vet nurse explained that the breed “unnerved her” and shared why they were difficult to deal with in a vet clinic.
“Why would a border collie be scared of me? They will literally go head-to-head with a cow,” she said.
“Not only that, they are so clever, they are out with you straight away and also the tolerance level is (limited). They will give you one lick and then bang, they bite you.”
However, Eve made an exception for those with a “lovely” temperament because they are “the nicest dog you’ve ever met in your life” but added that border collies that don’t have that temperament are “unhinged.”
Part of the problem, she said, was the breed’s intelligence which meant you needed “cat-like reflexes” to deal with them but conceded they were difficult to deal with in a clinic environment.
“They can be so lovely but you just do one little thing that they don’t like, and remember nurses we’re always doing stuff they don’t like,” she said
“The second they sense anything they’re so nimble and fast, it’s just like, bang, nip.”
@eve_the_veterinary_nurse I love all breeds but something about this one makes me extra cautious 😂 #dogs #bordercolliesoftiktok #vetnurse #vetnurselife #scary ♬ original sound – Theveterinarynurse
Social media fans rushed to share their experiences with the breed and gave mixed results.
“As a border collie owner, I knew you were going to say border collie,” one commented.
“My border collie is the daftest dog you will ever meet. He runs from cows/ sheep but runs at quad bikes,” another added.
“I have an unhinged border collie and the first thing I have to say to people that come into my home is to not look him in the eye or he’ll go mad.”
“Border collies, unpredictable. Mine was a nightmare once he turned 6.”
While another commentator confirmed that “no vet has been able to take our border collie x spaniel’s temperature.”
“I agree and I own one, he is a dream at home and on walks but at the vets he is another level.”
However, if you are thinking about getting a canine companion, researchers have unleashed the power of artificial intelligence to help you choose the best breed for your needs.
Over two years, Dr Mohammad Hossein Amirhosseini, from the University of East London, and the US dog training company Dogvatar applied machine learning techniques to behavioural data from the University of Pennsylvania’s C-BARQ database which contains over 70,000 behavioural records.
The outcome was five distinct categories, each corresponding to a different personality type:
Excitable/Hyperattached.
Anxious/Fearful.
Aloof/Predatory/.
Reactive/Assertive.
Calm/Agreeable.
“The results of such studies could potentially generate insights regarding why dog-human partnerships succeed or fail, thereby reducing future rates of shelter relinquishment and euthanasia, and may also help to guide animal shelter and rescue groups towards more successful and mutually rewarding dog adoptions,” the report said.
