If you live in a cold climate, there’s a good chance you’re running your central heating pretty much non-stop throughout the winter, and likewise air-conditioning throughout the warmer months.
And if you’ve got ceiling vents, there’s also a good chance that they’ve built up a fair bit of dust over that time. Let’s face it; they’re an absolute pain to clean, especially if you’ve got high ceilings. And as you get older, it can get only more and more difficult to climb up to get them down for cleaning.
The trouble is, when they’re dusty, that dust gets re-circulated through the air you’re breathing, which can exacerbate conditions such as hay fever, allergies, and asthma.
So although it’s a bit of a pain, it is important to keep them as clean as possible.
Luckily, there is a trick to cleaning them that will not only get them sparkling clean, but will also help to keep them clean, prevent dust building up, and make future cleaning easier.
The key is wax. In fact, the very same one you use on your car.
Take the vent or vents down, and wash them initially in a sink full of hot soapy water, then let them dry. Next, coat them in wax, ensuring the entire vent is covered on both sides. Lastly, buff the wax off, just like you would with a car.
It’s tedious if you’ve got multiple vents to do, but take your time and it will actually safe you time and effort in the future.
