How to find out if you’re eligible for a Seniors Card and where to get it

Last week, we published an article on what discounts you were eligible for with your seniors card. We were inundated with emails and messages that asked us where you could get your seniors card.

Because the answer isn’t as simple as you need to be this age and working this much, we have done the hard work for you and found out how you can apply and what the eligibility criteria is in each state and territory.

Once you have a seniors card you may become eligible for certain benefits and concessions, as well as discounts on goods and services.

QUEENSLAND

Types of cards

Queensland Seniors Card

This card offers the following benefits:

  • Eligibility for certain Queensland Government concessions
  • Discounts on goods and services at participating outlets throughout Queensland
  • Access to the free Senior Shopper service

Seniors Card +go

This card offers the same concessions and discounts as above, but also functions as a go card:

If you already have a Seniors Card, you can upgrade to the Seniors Card +go for free.

Seniors Business Discount Card

If you’re not eligible for the Queensland Seniors Card or Seniors Card +go, you may still be eligible for the Seniors Business Discount Card, which offers:

  • Discounts on goods and services at participating outlets throughout Queensland
  • Access to the free Senior Shopper service

Eligibility

To be eligible for a QLD Seniors Card, Seniors Card+go or a Seniors Business Discount Card, you must:

  • be a permanent resident of Queensland.
  • live in Queensland for at least 6 months of the year

Seniors Card or Seniors Card+go

To be eligible for a Seniors Card or Seniors Card+go you must be:

  • 65 years or older and working less than 35 hours a week in paid employment
    OR
  • 60–64 years, working less than 35 hours a week in paid employment and the holder of one of the below:
    • Commonwealth Pensioner Concession Card
    • Commonwealth Health Care Card
    • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
    • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold, White or Orange card.

Seniors Business Discount Card

To be eligible for a Seniors Business Discount Card, you must be 60 years or older.

How to apply

There is one application process for all three card types. You will be issued with a card based on your eligibility.

If you have a card and your eligibility has changed, you can upgrade, replace or cancel your card online or call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

You can apply up to 2 months prior to your 60th birthday (your card will be issued when you turn 60) here via the online seniors application form or by post. Simply print and complete the application form, then post it to:

NSW

Eligibility

To be eligible for the NSW Seniors Card, you must be:

  • 60 years of age or over when applying
  • a permanent resident of NSW
  • working no more than 20 hours average of paid work a week (calculated annually), and
  • the holder of a valid green Medicare Card.

VICTORIA

Types of cards

Seniors Card

The Victorian Seniors Card provides holders with discounts from over 4,000 participating businesses across Victoria. Most businesses offer a minimum of 10% discount on goods or services.  Victorian Seniors Card holders receive public transport concessions and Seniors fares.

Benefits:

  • Business discounts
  • Free and concession public transport
  • Free seniors myki
  • Exemption from Fishing Licence in Victorian Waters

Seniors Business Discount Card

The new Seniors Business Discount Card is available to Australian residents aged 60 years and over who permanently reside in Victoria, and work 35 hours or more per week. Seniors Business Discount Card holders can access discounts from over 4,000 participating businesses across Victoria. The Seniors Business Discount Card does not provide public transport concessions.

Benefits:

  • Business discounts

Eligibility

Victorian Seniors Card

You must be:

  • 60 years of age or over
  • Working less than 35 hours per week in paid employment, or fully retired
  • A permanent resident of Australia, residing in Victoria

Seniors Business Discount Card

You must be:

  • 60 years of age or over
  • Working 35 hours or more per week in paid employment
  • A permanent resident of Australia, residing in Victoria

How to apply

To apply for either Seniors Card or Seniors Business Discount Card, simply complete the online Application Form.

Please allow approximately three weeks to process your application and receive your card.

Applicants for a Victorian Seniors Card only (i.e. not Seniors Business Discount Card) can also pick up an application from Australia Post outlets.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Eligibility

To be eligible for the WA Seniors Card program, you need to be:

  • aged 61 years or above
  • a permanent resident of Western Australia
  • work less than 25 hours per week, averaged over a 12-month period. This allows for circumstances such as doing shift work, monthly or fortnightly rosters and seasonal work.

Your WA Seniors Card does not need to be renewed, however, please advise the WA Seniors Card Centre if you change your address or lose your card.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Eligibility

You’re eligible for a Seniors Card if you meet the following three criteria:

  1. you’re aged 60 years or older
  2. you’re a permanent South Australian resident
  3. you’re not working more than 20 hours per week in paid employment (part-time and casual employees may average their hours over a 12 month period).

There is no income or pension limit and the card is issued free of charge.

How to apply

You can apply for a Seniors Card online or complete the Seniors Card application form and return by:

Application forms are also available from Australia Post outlets or phone (free call) 1800 819 961.

Notes

  • You must sign the form in front of someone who is over 18 years of age and not related to you. They must sight your birth certificate, driver’s licence, passport or a similar document as proof of your date of birth.
  • You will receive your card within two to three weeks.
  • You will receive a copy of the Seniors Card Discount Directory, Your Lifestyle Guide with your card.

TASMANIA

Eligibility

The program is free to join and is not asset tested. The Seniors Card is a business discount card not a concessions card.

To be eligible for the free lifelong Tasmanian Seniors Card you must be:

  • a resident of the State,
  • 60 years of age or over, and
  • not working more than 20 hours per week in paid employment.

How to apply

You can apply for a Tasmanian Seniors Card over the counter at any Service Tasmania Shop.

Once the application form is completed, return it to a Customer Service Officer at Service Tasmania with three original pieces of identification.

The Customer Service Officer will process your application and give you the approved form with the receipt and Seniors Card number imprinted on it. This is your temporary Seniors Card which can be used immediately, in Tasmania only.

Please allow up to 28 days for delivery of your permanent Seniors Card which can be used interstate as well as in Tasmania.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

Eligibility

To be eligible for a NT Seniors Card, you must be:

  • over 60 years of age
  • a permanent resident of the Northern Territory

Your Seniors Card is issued as a lifetime card. Replacements are available if your card becomes damaged, lost or stolen.

ACT

Eligibility

To be eligible for an ACT Seniors Card, you must be:

  • over 60 years of age
  • a permanent resident of the ACT
  • working no more than 20 hours of paid work a week

How to apply

Applications for a Seniors Card are available from Government shopfronts: (Belconnen, Tuggeranong, Woden, Dickson). ACT Public Libraries (Belconnen, Civic, Dickson, Erindale, Gungahlin, Kippax, Tuggeranong, Woden) or the Council on the Ageing Office, Hughes Community Centre, Hughes.

Applications are not available online.

You are required to provide proof of age and residency, then you will be issued with a new Seniors Card and the current ACT Seniors Card Directory.
