Dear readers.
Now I don’t wish to alarm you, but while you’ve been diligently polishing the kitchen bench and giving the loo a respectable once-over, there are a few rather unsavoury little corners quietly plotting behind your back.
Yes, my dear, I’m talking about the spots we all forget. The ones that sit there, gathering grime with the patience of a saint and the enthusiasm of a Labrador in a muddy field.
Let’s begin with the light switches. Touched dozens of times a day, and yet rarely given so much as a passing wipe. If walls could talk, I imagine they’d politely suggest we show them a bit more attention. A quick swipe with a cloth and mild cleaner does wonders, and spares you the embarrassment should a particularly observant guest pop round.
Then there’s the remote control. A curious object, isn’t it? Passed about, dropped between cushions, occasionally rescued from under the sofa with something unidentifiable clinging to it. Give it a gentle clean, nothing too soggy, mind you.
Door handles are another culprit. We come and go, hands full, hands not always freshly washed (I won’t pry), and yet the handles themselves are expected to soldier on uncleaned. A quick wipe takes seconds and makes a surprising difference.
Now, I must mention the top of the fridge. Out of sight, yes – but very much not out of dust. It’s the sort of place that collects a fine layer of fluff which, left unchecked, could almost qualify as a small ecosystem. Do have a peek – you may be astonished.
And finally, the humble reusable shopping bag. We’re all terribly good these days, doing our bit and bringing them along, but when did you last wash one? Exactly. A quick turn in the washing machine now and then keeps things fresh and avoids transporting yesterday’s crumbs into tomorrow’s groceries.
The truth is, keeping a home clean isn’t about scrubbing every inch until it gleams like a palace. It’s about noticing the little things – the overlooked, the ignored, the quietly accumulating.
So next time you’re pottering about with a cloth in hand, cast your eye to the less obvious. A quick wipe here, a dab there, and you’ll feel ever so virtuous – without breaking a sweat.
And if you happen to discover a particularly alarming patch of grime, do take comfort: it was almost certainly there long before you noticed it.
But before we start, maybe a nice cup of tea is in order. We can sit back, put our feet up and have a leisurely ponder on where the dirt might be hiding. No rush, it will still be there tomorrow.
Until next week dears x
